Lady Eagles’ mid-quarter
march muddies Hawks
_MATT WELCH_

CARROLLTON - The Allen girls bas-
ketball team (2-4 in district) was held to
single digits during three of four quarters
in Tuesday’s matchup against Hebron (0-
6).
The Lady Eagles were also outscored
during two of those quarters, yet enjoyed a
double-digit lead for the bulk of the second
half en route to a 51-36 victory.
“In the first half, we tried to play to
their tempo too much and it slowed us
down,” said Sean Weibling, Allen head
coach. “But if you don’t make your shots,
you can’t press and we got a bit more of
that in the second half.”
While the first and fourth quarters fa-
vored Hebron, 22-18, the Lady Eagles se-
cured their second district win by
bludgeoning the Lady Hawks in the mid-
dle frames, 33-14.
Each quarter offered something differ-
ent, with Allen’s offense swelling a 17-12
lead at halftime into a 42-26 edge after
three quarters. Faced with a zone defense
for several portions of the game, the Lady
Hawks essentially dared Allen to beat
them with shooting. In dropping 25 points
in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles more
than acquiesced.
Despite not having a field goal to her
name in the second half, sophomore Anna
Horowitz commandeered the charge by
setting up teammates for open looks
aplenty. Horowitz-laced skip passes keyed
a comer jumper by junior Rachel Piles and
a follow-up 3-pointer by freshman Kayla
Bise to give Allen its first double-digit edge
at 30-20 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
“We’ve been getting better at [3-point-
ers],” Weibling said. “With that, the
biggest thing is making sure we have op-
tions and are not shooting too quickly
against a zone.”
An and-1 by Rayvon Christian, who led
the Lady Hawks with 10 points and seven
rebounds, pulled Hebron back to 33-26
with 2:30 left in the third frame, but would
mark the Lady Hawks’ final points of the
quarter as Allen outscored Hebron, 9-0,
from there.
Another 3-pointer by Bise, whose bench
scoring led Allen with 13 points on three

ALLEN BOYS BASKETBALL
Sharpshooters: Hebron duo fires away, blasts Allen
_MATT WELCH_

CARROLLTON - The first
minute of Tuesday’s District 8-5A
boys basketball tilt between Hebron
(3-1 in district) and Allen (1-3) set the
tone for the ensuing 31 minutes.
Freed up for an open look at the
top of the key, Hebron’s Ridge Ship-
ley converted the Hawks’ first basket
of the game on a 3-pointer.
It was the first of many long-
range makes to come for the Hawks,
who shot their way to a 62-48 victory
over the Eagles.
‘We had a tough loss on Friday (to
Plano West),” said Mark Bishop, He-
bron head coach. “You have to have
amnesia in this district because
every game’s so tough and you can’t
dwell on them.
“You’ve got to come ready.”
A team that has built a 16-5
record partially on the shoulders of a
high-octane offense, Hebron gave the
Eagles a crash course in efficient
shooting with 5:30 left in the second
quarter. After a floater by Allen jun-
ior Cameron Epps cut Hebron’s lead
to 21-18, the Hawks responded with
a 15-4 run to close out the half.
Hebron’s long-range assault was
the difference as Shipley and Drew
Nelson helmed an attack that ac-
counted for eight 3-pointers in the
first half — five in the second quar-
ter.
An NBA-range make by Shipley
opened the floodgates and Nelson fol-
lowed suit, dropping consecutive
treys for a 33-20 lead with 1:10 to
play in the half. Nelson, who led the
Hawks with 19 points — including
five makes from long distance — and
three steals, added a last-second feed
from Shipley for a layup and 36-22
edge entering the break.
“Drew has really shot the ball
well all year,” Bishop said. “He had
