Cats broadside Pirates 28-0
by Jerry Phillips
Last Thursday night the Archer City
Head Coach, Jerry Palmore, lit the
fuse on an offensive cannon that ex-
ploded for 414 total yards and a third
straight victory. Led by Dennis
Gillispie, Dustin Owens, and Steven
Wuthrich, the Wildcat offense scored
two times in the second quarter and
two times in the fourth quarter, and
Beau Reneau was 4 of 4 on extra point
kicks. Petrolia stacked defensively to
contain the run, but failed to take
advantage of good field position in a
first quarter that ended 0-0. The Pi-
rates drove to the Archer City 26-yard
line with 2:30 left in the opening
stanza, but the Cat defense, playing
without the services of Jarrod Canada
and Justin Goforth, stiffened to re-
gain possession on downs. Petrolia
threatened again early in the second
period when Petrolia's Chad Clement
returned a punt to the Archer 35-yard
line. The stingy Wildcat defense again
rose to the occasion led by Adam
Getts (9 tackles), Josh Winter (8 tack-
les), Dee Canada (7 tackles), and
Derrick Hickerson (6 tackles).
The Pirates were successful shut-
ting down the Cat rushing attack early
by loading the defense up front and
sending all hands on deck after the
quarterback. With 9:34 left in the
second quarter, the strategy backfired
as Owens rolled right to hit Wuthrich,
who beat the defender down the visi-
tors' sideline to haul in a 60-yard
touchdown reception. Later in the
quarter, after Jacob Crouse recovered
a fumble, Owens rolled left and Shaun
Timberlake successfully battled the
defender to make a 28-yard reception
to give the Cats good field position.
With 22 seconds left in the half, Den-
nis Gillispie scored the first of his two
touchdowns on a 9-yard run. The
tough running Junior carried the ball
15 times to gain 231 of Archer's 281
rushing yards.
Penalties plagued the Cats as they
were penalized 7 times for 60 yards,
resulting in the recall of 2 touch-
downs and giving the Pirates ball pos-
session after tough, defensive work.
After a scoreless third quarter, the
Wildcats took over on the Pirate 10-
yard line with 8:14 left in the game,

by Dee Canada. Beau Reneau stepped
in from 5 yards out and added the
extra point to make the score 21-0.
The final touchdown run came with
5:34 left in the fourth quarter as
Gillispie scampered 61 yards to ex-
tend the Cat lead. Owens finished the
night, completing 6 of 15 passes for
133 yards with 87 yards going to
Steven Wuthrich. Zac Truett pro-
vided effective support running, re-
ceiving, and as a defender. The Ar-
by Jerry Phillips
On Tuesday, September 15, the Ar-
cher City Junior Varsity Wildcats beat
the Petrolia Pirate JV 24-0 in a contest
delayed initially by lightning and
played for most of the first half in a
driving rain. Archer's JV showed little
concern for the elements as they took
the opening kickoff and drove it 80
yards for touchdown. The drive was
sparked by the tough running of Jimmy
Holley. Holley scooted into the end
zone with 1:12 left in the first quarter
and added the two point conversion
run to make the score 8-0. The Wild-
cat JV defense held, forcing Petrolia
to punt with 6:58 left in the half. The
first play from the Archer 41 yard line
was a quick pass to Holley from Matt
Stults which covered 59 yards for an
apparent touchdown, but an illegal
block wiped out the touchdown. Later
in the drive, Jared Crouse picked his
way to the Petrolia 11 yard line on an
inside reverse. Holley again covered
the last 4 yards to paydirt on a fourth
and three. He again added the two
point conversion run to make the score
16-0. The Pirate JV drove to the AC
15 yard line, but the Cat JV defense
swarmed to the football to keep the
shutout intact.
Archer received the second half kick-
off but was unable to move and on
fourth and two, the snap to the punter
rolled on the wet ground to the Archer
City 8 yard line to thwart the Petrolia
threat. The final scoring drive of the
night covered 90 yards in 5 plays as
Chip Halt Holley, Stults with tough
funning hioved the ball to the Archer
30 yqrd line. The final play of the
drive was a duplicate of the nullified
cher City Wildcat defense allowed
Petrolia 131 rushing yard and 34 pass-
ing yards but recovered 2 of 3 forced
fumbles and intercepted a pass to deny
the Pirates any points.
The Wildcat defense has not al-
lowed a touchdown, but will face a
tough contest for Homecoming Fri-
day night against Albany. Pre-game
festivities will begin at 7:30 with kick-
off set for 8:00 p.m.
touchdown earlier in the evening, but
this time it counted. Stults hit Holley
with a perfect strike on a slant pattern
that covered 70 yards. Holley again
added the two-point conversion run to
make the final score 24-0 with thirty-
nine seconds left in the third quarter.
Neither team was able to score in the
fourth quarter.
The Wildcat JV defense was paced
by Patrick Martin and Matt Stults with
4 tackles each. Other defensive
standouts were Zach Rowe, Brett Hoff,
Tony Salas, Johnny Harvey, and Chip
Hall. The Junior Varsity Wildcats
will play in Albany Thursday (tonight).

Wildcat JV wins wet n wild
J-Cats edged
by Petrolia JH
by Jerry Phillips
On Tuesday, September 15, the
Archer City J-Cats traveled to Petrolia
for a battle with the Junior High
Pirates. The game was moved up to
accommodate the Pioneer Reunion
in Clay County. Behind the tough
running of Petrolia's Ross Harrison,
the Pirates outpaced the gritty J-Cats
14- 6. The celebration started early
for Petrolia as the Archer City
fumbled the opening kickoff, giving
the Pirates the ball only 20 yards
from the J-Cat goal line. It took only
a few plays for the Pirates to score
from that point as Harrison scored
the first of his two touchdowns. The
extra point run failed.
Doug Sheppard wasted no time
evening the score as he ran the ensu-
ing kickoff back 60 yards for the
Cat's only score of the day. The
Archer City defense held Petrolia in
check until 1:17 left in the half when
Harrison again scored and the two-
point conversion was good to the end
of the scoring. Archer's Wes Bullard
intercepted a pass as time expired in
the half.
The teams traded punts in the third
and early in the fourth quarter. The
J-Cats mounted a threat as they drove
to the Petrolia 36 sparked by a nifty
15- yard run by John Hayley. Archer
was unable to move and Petrolia
started a drive to the J-Cat 5-yard
line and seemed to be moving in for
the clinching touchdown with 2:32
left in the game. Petrolia with a first
and goal from the AC 5 yard line
threw in the end zone and Kellen
Green intercepted for the Cats to
keep the Archer hopes alive. The
final hope of comeback vanished
when Petrolia intercepted a pitch out
pass to seal the win.
Leading defenders for the J-Cats
were Jacob Raney (6 tackles), Wes
Bullard (4 tackles), Doug Sheppard
(4 tackles). Other standouts were
John Hayley, John Whitsitt, Jon
Canada, and Steven Reynolds. Quar-
terback Brice Blake completed two
passes to Reynolds. The J-Cats re-
turn to action tonight in Albany.
