READERS ANSWER THE MAIL
Dear Helen:
I must answer “Mother at
Her Wit’s End,” who has the
problem with her dope addict
son.
There is definitely help and
hope for this problem. My son,
who is now an ex-addict, had been
using heroin for about three
years. Before that he used cough
syrup and pills. He spent sev-
eral months in a hospital for
addicts, in Kentucky, but used
heroin the first week he was
home. He sought help in
every psychiatric clinic and so-
cial agency, but nothing could
break the habit. He became in-
creasingly less able to function,
though he is a talented man in
a good profession.
Finally, we heard of Synanon
House, a non-profit California
foundation that rehabilitates dope
addicts. Although they were
crowded, they accepted $150
children’s psyche. Why NOT em-
barrass them a little — they
certainly don’t mind embarrass-
ing us once in a while!—MRS.
J. L.

Are Read Saturday in Houston
California. That was almost eight
months ago. He is doing well,
has joined a youth group, be-
longs to the baseball team, is
going back to school to improve
in his profession. People in the
community help, as do business
houses — and most services are
donated. These addicts here are
given faith in themselves again.
Incidentally, that first $150 was
the only money they ever accept-
ed from us.
At Synanon they feel that drug
addiction is the result of an un-
derdeveloped personality. An ad-
dict has problems, and they dig
until the reason for the addiction
is uncovered — so that a cure
can be affected.
There is a wayside Synanon
House at Westport, Conn., which
has room for only about 30 people.
They are trying to get a large
Synanon house in the East as
there are presently about 200
East Coast addicts being cared
for out West.
Every Saturday night about
8:30, the Westport Synanon house
(on Green Farms Road) holds
open house. Helen, I wish you
could attend. You will be amazed
and thrilled. You talk to girls
and fellows, some of whom were
once thieves, prostitutes, forg-
ers and what have you. And all
were once on dope. You can’t be-
lieve what you hear. They are

Mrs. G. L. Reeves, noble grand

welcome address.
The morning program included
introduction of officers, intro-
