Rail-Roads.
Public opinion is in a rapid course of dovelopement on the subject
of railroads in Texas. Without reviewing elaborately the various
shades of opinion advanced in different quarters we will merely give-
each a passing notice' to keep oUr readers correctly posted up.
The Houston Convention as will bo seen by a communication from
that city in our present number; endorsed the Galveston plan of im-
provements by tho State not because that-body was in favor of the
plan but in order merely to keep their Galveston friends in a good'
humor and secure their hearty co-operation and active exertions irt
pushing forward immediately the jRed River and Austin roads. That
such was the true reason for' Pndprsihg the Galveston plan is further
demonstrated by tho following article from the last Beacon : '
u'Tho Galveston Journdl in speaking of tho vote on the resolutions adopted
by tho late Rail-Road meeting in this city says they were adopted with only
three or lour dissenting Votes. TIiq. Editor had certainly u good opportunity
of judging of the vote yet wo are 'morntly certain that his assertion as to the
vote i9 incorrect. The vote was' carried by only a smal majority ifdt all at
wits evirtced by calling for a division and if the Journal would havo ' its readers
belie vo that the public sentiment of Houston or of Harris county is in lavor oi
tho scheme ofimprovements by the S(atc it islargoly .out of its reckoning."
So we 'may regard-public sentiment "at Houston as substantially the
shine as that advanced by tho Austin and Palestine Conventions the
building of roads by private companies assisted by tho State by loans
of money well secured." ' ' ' '''
A railroad .meeting was held at .Anderson Grimes county .on the'
9th instant at which resolutions Were adopted in favor" of improve-
ments by the State instead of private corporations. They do not en-
dorse the Gavestonplan but-the; views expressed would!lead to tho
same results. Dr. R. C. Neblett presided and J. G. McDonald acted
as secretary. A corresponding committee was appointed composed of
Geo. M. Patrick. J aines Lawrence Wm.H. Neblett James 5Y
Barnes' and J. G. McDonaldi 7 ' '
A railroad meeting was also held at Hun'tsville on the 11th inslant
at which Col. Henderson Yoakum presided A. M. Branch' Esq.
