Congress certification of the how
ling alleys has been accompUsh-
ed. All members of the Friday
Night City league were signed up
that night and are now members
in good standing of the only
men’s national bowling organi-
zation in the U.S. Now, Elmo,
when you roil that 300 game, you
are going to win some money
and get some medals.
News that might interest lad-
ies that are not now bowling in a
league is the announcement by
Mrs. Thompson of the Organiza-
tion of a strictly ladies’ league.
Glancing at the names now
on the list, I would guess they
have about half enough volun-
teers. The call is out for all in-
terested persons to contact Mrs,
Thompson at the lanes, or, just
go by and sign up.
Pipe Creek makes the h e a d-
lines this week. Our only bowler
in the City league from that city,
lugu IUI LUC
ladies was C. Ritchey, Thursday
Mixed, with a 414 total. She had
games of 134, 128 and 152. We
should mention Pete Hartman
this week for his two good ses-
sions. Monday night he rolled 482
and Friday night, 490.
In the split department, Elmo
Pope retrieved the 4-5-7, and
Julia Kenny picked up the 5-10.
Oh, you gotta watch those sharp-
ies!

Dear Friend:
This nation faces the problem
of cutting Government ex-
penditures in the face of an ex-
ploding population.
Basically, the Nation’s needs
are multiplying faster than the
replacements. Those of you fac-
ing the problem of buying cloth-
ing for growing school-age child-
ren know exactly what that
means. What is bought today
threatens to be too small tomor-
row.
Housewives can picture the
problem of setting an additional
8,000 places at the dinner table
every night. That’s what is hap-
pening over the Nation.
Day in and day out, we’re gain-
ing almost 8,000 more persona
than we had the day before. One
more person is being added to
the population about every 12
seconds. We’re gaining at the
rate of 7,855 a day . . . and the
average is 2,884,000 a year.
That’s how fast this Nation is
growing.
And all of this growth creates
new demands. There is demand
for more homes, more schools,
more churches, more hospitals.
There is increased need in the
broad fields of health, transpor-
tation, education, finance and
welfare. All this places increased
demands on both government and
business.
There is also another important
fact we need remember.
There are now in this Nation
more than 14,000,000 men and wo-
men 65 or older. And this num-
ber is increasing at the rate of
more than 400,000 a year. The
majority of these people are no
longer working. But here is a
great reservoir of mature talent,
experience and know-how. I won-
der if this isn’t a tremendous- re-
source now being wasted.
This situation spells out both
problems and opportunities. It
____means that in our search for the
72 101 268 right roa<i to economy, we must
157 167 135— 459 avoid short-cuts that could lead
------—— ^ national stagnation. We must
recognize that this is a dynamic
period of expanding needs as well
as changing times.
Our job is to economize, to cut
expenditures where spending can
be cut. But in doing that, we
must balance the tremendous
needs of today against the known
demands of tomorrow. That is the
goal I expect the Senate in this
session to achieve.

THE WEATHER
By Don Wanxl
It’s spring again! The swallows
are arriving at Capistrano today,
and Hondo’s signs of spring are
showing up too—with the local
political candidates buying you
campaign cups of coffee, and with
fishermen buttonholing you with
the latest fish story.
—d.a.w.—
Most of the fish stories I’ve
heard so far are all truthful—
that it is too cold to do any good
fishin’ and they haven’t caught
any yet. Still have to hear a
report on that from Jack Fussel-
man, Sr.
—d.a.w.—
This week marks Hondo’s
second VALUE DAYS promo-
tions. The gals working here in
the office tell me that the adver-
tised merchandise is even a bet-
ter buy than that which was ad-
vertised last month.
Again the participating stores
will be offering super values, free
prizes, etc. There will be a draw-
ing again on the Northwest cor-
ner of the Court House plaza. The
time has been set at 3:00 Satur-
day-afternoon.
We have to fall in that "non-
native” class and say that from
the looks of the weather so far,
we’ll have much nicer days for
the event than we had the last
time.
Come on out — you’ll find it’s
easier and more congenial shop-
ping in Hondo.
—d.a.w.—
Next Sunday, in addition to be-
ing Palm Sunday, is also the
feast day of St. Isidore. There
are patron saints for different
things. I’m sure you’ve heard the
maiden’s prayer that goes, “Dear
St. Ann, send me a man.” Well,
St. Isidore is the patron saint of
farmers.
And some folks in this county
will be taking seed and soil to
church for a church blessing.
Legend has it that St. Isidore
was so faithful in the practice of
his church attendance that one
day he went to church when he
really had to get a crop planted
and couldn't afford church going
time. But he went. And when he
returned, he found his field was
miracuously planted. Thus, he be-
came the patron of farmers.
—d.a.w.—
The Mayor asked if we’d pass
along this word to picnickers who
will be using Hondo’s picnic park.
He asked that each of you using
the park this year make a special
effort to help keep it clean by
using the garbage cans provided
out there.
An ex-serviceman would put it
more strongly — police tip the
area after you’re done picnick-
ing.
—d.a.w.—
As you go through the ads this
root you’ll find another sure
week, .
sign of spring.
To my knowledge, there are
four Hondo business firms adver-
tising power lawn mowers for
sale this week. And from the
looks of some of the grass I’ve
seen, it’s getting about that time.
—d.a.w.—
Judging from the news we read
out of Washington these days,
one of the easiest ways to get a
high-payin’ cushy job, is to be
born an Iowa politician’s son.
—d.a.w.—
Be sure to read JUST WHAT
THE DR. ORDERED—you’ll see
that WANT ADS are still doing a
bang-up job for readers of our
newspaper.
They can do the same for you.
Just call HA 6-3346, and one of
our courteous staffers will be glad
to help you write it.
—d.a.w.—
Next week is Holy Week and
then Easter. Now is the time to
make your Easter preparation,
instead of waiting ’til the last
minute.
—d.e.w.—

What Does the Bible teach
follows death? Is personal im-
mortality really to be desired,
or should we. like Hindus and
Buddhists, want to avoid it?

Memo From AAllllO
at FLY HARDWARE
Ah, spring. First March
winds, then April showers, and
than May flowers.
The grass Is already begin-
ning to show some growth and
even the mosquitos are begin-
ning to venture soma small
buds. It's time to thjnfc of
yards and lawn care again.
We have lots of garden hosa
and sprinklers to combat those
drying March winds hare at
Fly Hardware. If the gutty
winds bring down old loaves
and ramanents of dry twigs wa
have same rakes to da a quick
cleanup.
To give the flower bads that
final last minute going over
wa have spading forks and
regular spades in a variety of
sizes. And to give the yard
that final finishing touch wa
Hava lawn mowers and grass
shears.

For that "extra something"
wa have |uit the thing to
dress up your homo. Put a
small tub, complata with han-
dle, on your porch and fill it
with flowers to groat your
guests. We have a selection of
sizes, shapes, and prices in
these tubs.
My tip for the week, to aid
that "green thumb" In your
family, coma down and aoloct
a handy lightweight watering
can.
