voters going to the two city

369 and the South box had
366 voters. Two years ago,
the vote in the Timpson boxes

Shelby county polled 5607
votes in last Saturday’s Demo-
cratic primary election, falling
short a few hundred votes of
the number qualified to express
their preferences at the polis.
In the August run-off elec-
tion there will only be two of-
fices for voters to decide upon.
One of these will be for the
United States Senate with
! Coke Stevenson and Lyndon
Gnffnij0j^S0n on tj,e ticket. The
other office will be for State
Representative with Milton
Wilkinson and Morris Samford
on the ticket.
There were only three coun-
ty offices this year with oppo-
sition. Upon the basis of un-
official returns AUphin Hughes
was re-elected county judge,
defeating Clarence Samford.
V. V. (Verbon) Pate was elect-
ed District Clerk, defeating J.
Grady Crenshaw. Milton Wil-
kinson and Morris Samford
will be in the run-off for State
Representative.
Shelby county gave her na-
tive son, George Peddy, a nice
vote for U. S. Senator. Out of
the 5607 votes, Mr. Peddy re-
ceived 4228, with Coke Steven-
son running second with 561
votes. Lyndon Johnson ran
third with 355 votes.
Following is the unofficial
tabulation of county returns.

{Political AdTftrtlsemea;)
Dallas, Tex., July 26.—Coke
R. Stevenson, the former Gov-
ernor who once said he was go-
ing to retire to his ranch and
smoke his pipe, had a lead of
67,089 votes today over U. S.
Rep. 'Lyndon Johnson for the
Junior U. S. Senator’s berth
from Texas with more than a
million votes counted from Sat-
urday’s Democratic primary.
The master politician, who
has spent 30 of his 60 years in
politics and never has been
defeated, was disappointed on
one score, however. He faces
a run-off election Aug. 28 ’
against Johnson, the 39-year-
old Austin Congressman who
turned to a helicopter to bring
his political message to the
voters.
Latest returns gave Steven-
son 433,058, Johnson 365,969
and George Peddy, the Hous-
ton attorney who once before
was defeated for the Senate,
236,196. Stevenson was hold-
ing to approximately 40.3 per
cent of the total vote, expected
to be 1,214.411 votes.
Peddy in conceding defeat,
said that he would not support
either Johnson or Stevenson in
the run-off.
“The people of Texas are
perfectly capable of making
up their minds," he said.
Meanwhile, Gov. Beauford
H. Jester, the target of most of
his opponents’ tongue lashings
during the campaign, held a
clear-cut victory in his race to
succeed himself. Out of a total
of 968,050 votes counted in the
gubernatorial election, Jester
received 521,168—a clear ma-
jority.
25-YEAR-OLD MEN
FIRST IN DRAFT
Washington, July 27.—Se-
lective Service Director Lewis
B. Hershey told Congress to-
day 25-year-olds will be the
first to be drafted. After that,
he said, the draft will work
progressively downward until
it reaches the 19-year-olds.
