— Lon T. Messer of Roostown,
candidate for the Texas Sen-
ate, is making a campaign
unique in the state’s political
history. He is telling voters
that he ought to be elected to
the Senate because he has been
-a lobbyist.
‘.Messer puts it squarely up to
the voters of his district that a
man with 20 years’ experience
in the “third house’’ knows the
legislative procedure, ropes
-And angles better than those
without such experience.

Representative William Noll
Sewell of Midlothian also be-
lieves in the value of personal
experience. When 100 new
rookies start a training course
for entrance into the State
police, Sewell will enter the
school. He is not and appli-
cant for a place on the' froce
but he wants to find out first-
hand all about a policeman’s
duties. *

A big safety parade being
arranged at Fort Worth under
auspices of the Governor’s
Traffic Safety Committee, will
be lucky if it is held without
accident. From ordinary safe-
ty standards, promotion of the
the parade is an invitation for
injuries.
Errors pointed out in the
procedure are: (1) Removal of
motor police from regular
duties to parade; (2) Conges-
tion caused by caravans from
various parts of the State con-
verging in one area; (3) Block-
ing of usual traffic routes
while the parade is in progress.
The parade i3 to be a fea-
ture of a traffic safety conven-
tion on June 18.

Only three “Thompson for
Governor” buttons were worn
at the opening of Col. Ernest
O. Thompson’s campaign at
Waco last week.
There were many calls for
the buttons but the only ones
seen were worn by the Colonel,
by bis mother and by his secre-
tary.
No others were available.
The three buttons were
samples supplied by a cam-
paign button manufacturer.
“Thoroughbreds Don't Cry”
Packs Thrills of Turfdom
Launching Hollywood’s
newest find in British boy ac-
tors, Ronald Sinclair, in
‘^Thoroughbreds Don’t Cry,"
new drama of childhood loyal-
ties played against the panor-
ama of American racing, pro-
vides entertainment in a new
form last time today at the
Palace Theatre.
Thrills of racing abound.
Crooked turf operations are
exposed. Yet the story is not
a racing story, but the poign-
ant tale of the friendship and
loyalty of three youngsters
and a racetrack boarding
housekeeper. Judy Garland,
Sophie Tucker and Mickey
Rooney, playing a young
jockey, complete the dramatic
quartet. The new English boy
is a gifted and appealing actor,
Sophie Tucker has a sympathe-
tic role which she handles su-
perbly. Judy Garland sings
“Gotta Pair of New Shoes” and
makes herself generally loved
and Mickey Rooney adds an-
other triumph to his last as the
conceited jockey who tricks
his friend and in his remorse
finds regeneration.
The racing action, with
many famous horses and
jockeys, was filmed at the
Santa Anita racetrack. Hun-
dreds of people take part in
the crowd action.
Special camera effects bring
an exciting race down to ef-
fective “close-ups.”
Sneezes and coughs by per-
sons affected with colds shoot
the germs through an eight-
foot space.
On account of weather condi-
tions during the past few
weeks, we are continuing our
special prices awhQe longer.
