New Year’s Resolutions with
tills: "I resolve tills year to be a
hypocrite.” Nobody wants to bo
a hypocrite, no one loves socb a
person. As U they were net al-
ready detested
enough. Jesus shot '
at them his most
piercing nr-
eaems. The pa-
thetic tiling is that
even the best peo- j
pie can slip into j
hypocrisy without j
knowing it- Since. I

Just what it is that makes hypo-

Jesus condemned Ike Pharisees
ter being concerned with the looks
of things most of all. Aa he put x.
they cleaned up the outside of the
cup and the Tlatter but the inside
was led dirty. They themselves,
he said, were like graves over
whies men walked without know-
ing they were there Outside, they
were a grassy park. Down under,
inside, they were mailing hart de-
cay. The other day a buUdoaer
turned 8p four little coffins under
what is now an airport Nobody
bad gaessed those bodies were
under the gross. Tb. Brat thing
any one asked, after. “Who were
these?" was “Where shall we
pat them now?"’It turned out that
the four little bodies, busied a
century ago. belonged to one
family; aad ana living relative
could be tenad—but she did not
even wen* to took. Let them be
put under grass aumewhere else,
hide them as aeon aa posafeic.
WelL ftrere arc characters like
that. Cover all the dead stuff
looks right is right . . . Keep
thinking that way. live that way,
and you wrB be a hypocrite too.

Another count against the Phar-
isees was that they spent so much
time end energy os little things
that they missed the greater
things that a truly good We will
have. You could see Pharisees
out in their back yards counting
their mint-leaves. Every tenth
leaf belonged is the Lord, they
said; every tenth bean, every
tenth lettuce-leaf, and so on. But
leaf-counting took 19 too much
of their time. Justice? The love
of Ood? They bad no tlaae lor
It They were too busy with mint-
leaves Now It is good to be eon-
iflwtfhmff about tffVf; Jem
nothing to say against fast fat it-
self But it Is rather interesting
that the only times when Jesus
mentioned tithing, be cmvtrmwed
the people who did it —Not for
doing It, hot tor opposing that
that waa the main thing in re-
ligion. Whan Jesus picked out
something on which all the "law
and the peopbets" hang, a hind
of nail bolding 19 the rest of the
Bible, he picked something big;
Love to Ood and love to one’s
neighbor.

Another W4* to be a hypocrite
ia to be so much interested in the
past that you do not apply re-
ligion to the present In Jesus’
vivid language. tbe hypocrites
built the prophets’ tombs, but
they were children of those who
had murdered tbe prophets, and
they were the people who would
murder Jesus bfansrtf, They bon*
ored the prophets of the past; hut
prophets of At living present they
could not see aad did not honor.
tt is an ancient and stSB strong
temptation. There are persons
ia America who are very proud
of ancestors who crossed the
ocean tc worship God freely; but
who themselves wffi sot cross a
wet street to go to church. There
are persons proud of their revo-
lutionary ancestors, who attack
with every weapon of slander any
(me who has any proposals for
change today. Revolution in the
10th century—-fine!
Revolution in the twentieth cen-
tury—horrible! There are people
who wish to proeerve every line
of some historic creed and shout
down every one who has tbe least
suggestion of change; they for-
get that the creed-makers they
honor were themselves radicals,
innovators, dangerous men in the
eyes of thetr time. A church that
becomes a preserver of antique
ties, a historical society, and
nothing more, with nothing to say
to sow, is a church the Pharisees
would have loved . . . hut not
Jesus. »
