Capitol newsmen reporting
Gov. W. Lee O’Daniel’s Feb.
26, radio “chat” from the exe
sutive mansion got a chuckle
out of bne change made by the
governor in his text.
Regretting that he had
"nothing to report” concerning
the legislature, O’Daniel noted
that “many of the distinguish-
ed gentlemen of the legislature
have been busy all week study-
ing the various'legislative sug-
gestions.” Tha humor was that
“many of had been inserted
in the sentence.
Quoting from the texts of
the governor's speeches is
sometimes difficult. He writes
them all personally in a style
he has developed through long
association with the micro-
phone. The ehief punctuation
is a series of dashes "-”
and reporters sometimes are
puzzled as to where to divide
the sentences.
Words are marked out in
the script by using the dollar
mark instead of the Customary
‘X".
Radio men have noted that
the governor frequently single
spaces his paragraphs in con-
trast with the usual double or
triple space.

Since taking office, O'Daniel
has become hard to find on
Saturdays. Presumably it is
on those days that he secludes
himself to write the Sunday
broadcasts.

Almost every phase of Tex-
as life is bound to be discuss-
ed somewhere in the course of
a regular session of the legis-
lature. When the medical prac-
tice act was up for revision in
the house, for instance, Rep.
Paris Smith of Bay City, a
registered pharmacist for more
than 30 years, revealed that
only one “cure” is known to
medicine.
Quinine, Smith said, is a 100
per cent speciSe cure for
malaria.
There are other medicines
that will care in most cases
but quinine for malaria can be
advertised truthfully as a
“cure”—one that applies to
ALL cases, Smith said.
The point was made while
the house discussed a proposal
to prohibit advertising pa-
tent medicines as "cures for
anything.”
“Why, most of this stuff is
just a little sugar and wa-
ter,” said one supporter of the
proposal.
"Oh, well,” replied Rep.
Lon E. AIsup of Carthage,
“that’ll do a lot of them as
much good as anything."

Caesar Hohn, Washington
county farmer, was invited to
address the Texas senate, un-
der sponsorship of Sen. Albert
Stone of Brenham. Going to
the rostrum diffidently, Hohn
seemed greatly embarrassed.
He stuttered at every word.
Restarting sentences, he wouid
stutter them even more. Sena-
tors began to feel sorry foi*
him and complete silence
reigned.
Just as senators felt most
sorry for Hohn, he suddenly
quit stuttering and in perfect
diction invited them to attend
the Independence Day exer-
cises at Old Washington,
Then the senators learned
that that is Hohn’s favorite
stunt.
