Blame yourself
for bad habits
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and recently moved to De Kalb from
Galesburg, 111. It seems all the kids at De Kalb that I hang
around with like to smoke cigarettes and talk about drugs.
In Galesburg, none of my friends smoked or talked about
drugs. Is De Kalb a bad, bad influence on me? I’ve been
smoking for the last month. — Sue, De Kalb, 111.
Sue: I don’t believe it’s where you live that matters. It is
whom you hang around with that counts. Peer pressure is
very strong especially when one is 13 and looking for friends
because of moving.
De Kalb is a very nice city. Put the blame exactly where it
belongs — on your shoulders.
Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and have been having sex with my
boyfriend since I was 13. It has taken me two whole years to
realize all he wanted was sex. He told me, "If you love me,
you will.” Like a fool I thought that I loved him.
What I should have told him was, “If you love me, you
won’t.”
I hope my letter will help a confused young lady who
thinks she is in love and must have sex to prove it. — Karla,
San Mateo, Calif.
Karla: Thanks for writing. Every little bit of testimony
helps.
Dr. Wallace: I just want to tell you how much I appreciate
your column. About three years ago I wrote to you for a pen
pal and you sent me a fellow to write to.
I am now 19 and my life has been very trying for me. If I
didn’t have my pen pal I'm sure I would have given up my
place in this world a long time ago. I had nothing else to live
for except his positive reassuring letters.
Presently, I am starting to feel better about myself and I
know I’ve got a long way to go but now realize that I’m
headed in the right direction. All I can say is thank you. —
C.L., Seattle, Wash.
C.L.: When I left education four years ago to write the
column full time, my main concern was that I wouldn’t be in
“touch" with teens. It didn’t take long to realize the column
would be “touching” millions of teens, hopefully in a positive,
constructive way. Your letter was most welcome and all I
can say is thank you for writing.
Yes, the best time for us & you to invest in a wood stove is mid-summer before prices
go up. Would you be interested in a large selection of Earthstoves at old prices? Our 90-
day lay-a-way plan means you pay it out, & pick it up in late September to make it an
affordable & perfectly timed investment. Depending on a quick public reaction we can
do this before prices go up considerably on July 4. Please call or come by to let us
know.
