McEnroe, Lendl to clash
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)
— Flamboyant John McEnroe and
stoic Ivan Lendl scored straight-set
victories today to set up s
quarterfinal shootout in the $2.4
million Australian Open tennis
championships — a tournament
neither has won.
McEnroe, aiming to win his first
Grand Siam title in more than four
years, played with tremendous
guile and touch to defeat fellow
American Aaron Krickstein 7-6 (7-
4), 6-2, '6-3. Lendl recovered from
a slow start to overwhelm 16th-
seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel 7-
6 (7-2). 6-4.6-2.
Lendl and McEnroe, rivals far a
decade, will meet on center court
Wednesday.
McEnroe last won a Grand Slam
title at the 1984 U.S. Open, but said
after his victory over lOth-seeded
Krickstein that he felt he was fast
approaching his farm of the early
1980s, when......
player.
"I've come a long wav,” he said.
“1 feel more comfortably mentally
and my game is coming together.
“If I can player better tomorrow
I know I have a chance to win. Ob-
viously it would be great to beat
Lendl, but the job wouldn’t be over.
The ultimate goal is to win the
tournament.”
McEnroe, the seventh seed, ap-
peared to be having fun today.
Lendl, in contrast, was all business
against Mansdorf. He said he. too.
was looking forward to the
Bnal showdown with Mc-
quarterfir
Enroe.
when he was the world’s top
“He’s got so much talent you
have to be on top of your game and
hopefully play well enough to step
right into his space from the begin-
ning and keep the pressure on, the
second-seeded Czech said.
The duo is 14-14 head-to-head
but Lendl has won their last three
matches.
TWo-time champion Stefan Ed-
berg of Sweden also advanced with
a 6-4. 6-0, 6-2 win over hometown
hero Pat Cash, but suffered a back
injury in the final game and could
miss his quarterfinal Wednesday
against Ulh-sceded Thomas Mus-
ter of Austria.
Muster moved into the first
Grand Slam quarterfinal of his
career with a 6-3, 6-2. 7-5
cakewalk today over unscedcd
Swede Magnus Gustafsson.
Wimbledon champion Edberg
was in agony after injuring his back
while serving an ace at l£l5 in the
final set against a lethargic Cash,
who was suffering from a virus.
Edberg was treated at counside
and managed to complete the
match. He will decide Wednesday
morning whether to withdrew from
the tournament and give Muster a
free pass to the semifinals.
“We don’t really know what the
problem is,” Edberg’s British coach
Tony Pickard said. “At least now
we’ve got him walking, but we
cannot say before tomorrow
whether he will be fit to play.”
Edberg never has previously
been troubled by back spasms.
Cash, beaten finalist in the past two
Australian Opens, dropped 11
straight games after leading Edberg
4-3 in the first set.
Defending champion Steffi Graf
of West Germany moved into
semifinals of the women’s singles
with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over com-
patriot Claudia Kohde-Kilsch.
“I don’t sec her losing to any-
one,” said Kohde-Kilsch, the No. 8
seed.
Also advancing to the semifinals
were No. 3 Gabricla Sabatini of
Argentina and unscedcd New
Zealander Belinda Cordwell.
Sabatini set up a clash with arch-
rival Graf by rallying from a 1-3
deficit in the final set to beat No. 6
Zina Garrison of the United States
6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Sabatini hit a succes-
sion of sizzling groundstrokes.
Cordwell, a powerful and confi-
dent left-hander, beat Catarina
Lindqvist of Sweden 6-2, 2^>, 6-1
to gain her first Grand Slam semi-
final. She did not make it past the
quarterfinals of any event last year.
