Burt’s back on ABC, but
NBC still leads networks
NEW YORK (AP) — Burt
Reynolds returned to the small
screen last week, and television
viewers were apparently mighty
pleased.
His two-hour movie “B.L.
Stryker,” part of ABC’s rotating
“Mystery Movie,” ranked 13th in
the weekly A.C. Nielsen ratings.
That's better than the other two
movies in the series — Peter Falk’s
’Columbo.” which had stiff com-
ition from CBS’ “Lonesome
jve," and "Gideon Oliver,"
which premiered Monday night.
Last week was uneventful,
despite being part of the February
sweep — one of four months a year
when local stations' ratings are
measured and networks pile on the
specials to help affiliates. There
wasn’t a movie or miniseries in the
top 10, and NBC’s series won the
week.

Next to “B.L. Stryker,” NBC

Religion in the news
By JAMES HANNAH
Associated Press Writer
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) —
Equipped with protective lighting
filters, a library basement at Wit-
tenberg University is home to one
of the nation's largest collections of
the religious works of Martin
Luther, leader of the 16th century
Protestant Reformation
Some materials in the collection
are more than 500 years old. Some
of the documents we kept in a safe.
All require special permission to
study.
Tm,
was a professor of
theology at the University of Wit-
tenberg He was the leader of the
Reformation, a religious movement
that led 10 a schism m the Catholic
Church and the both of Protestan-
tism His translation of the Bible
into German helped create the
modem German language.
The Wittenberg collection boasu
numerous pamphlets written by
“Thu u what really spread the
Reformation throughout Europe
because these would go to pastors
in small towns throughout Europe,”
she said. “And that s the way the
word would spread.”
Along with the 1478 Bible and
the original Luther letter, die col-
lection includes a Bible Luther

Ms. Entdrf said fluorescent light-
ing in the library basement has spe-
cial shields to reduce the ultraviolet
light and protect the works.
“We don’t have climate control
yet, but we’re working on it,” she
said. “You need to keep it (the
humidity) down in the summer and
up in the winter. It has to be level.”

Here are the top prime-time tele-
vision ratings as compiled by the
A.C. Nielsen Co. for the week of
Feb. 13-19. A rating measures the
percentage of the nation's 90.4 mil-
lion TV names.

2. “A Different World." NBC.

It’s a real treasure for
scholars," said Regina Entorf, spe-
cial collections librarian. "So many
of these things have been lost
through fire and flood and bomb-
ing.”
Ms. Entorf said the materials are
invaluable to scholars who need to
trace exact wording of important
documents in the intellectual his-
tory of the Western world.
"A surprising number of people
know that these are here.” she said.
“And we do have people come and
study them from time to time. A lot
of these things are irreplaceable.”
The collection boasu about 350
books, pamphlets and prints, in-
cluding all of Luther's collected
worts from the 16th ceotury The
oldest is a Bible printed i* 1478,
only 23 years after the Gutenberg
Bible was printed on the world's
first printing press.
“It's a very beautiful thing," said
Ms. Entorf. "It's in the safe, as is a
letter that Luther wrote." The letter
is to a parishoner and answers
questions about eating meal sacrifi-
ced to idols.
She said the Wittenberg col let
non is one of the largest in the
country. Other Luther collections
include those at the Foiger
Shakespeare Library in Washington
and at Stanford University.
Some of the Wittenberg works
were pan of the original collection
at the school, which was founded in
1845.
"Of course, the people are
heavily Lutheran,” said Ms. Entorf.
“People just kept these books
forever. And we've had a lot of
gifts through the yean. We've
educated pastors from the very be-
ginning of our history.”
