Whn I ws just a boy. I lived for
a few months in Taylor. Of those
long-ago days, 1 can recall only a
few little things.
One of the pastimes at school dur-j
lng recess was matching pecans. If.
you came into possession of a tough-
shelled pecan and another boy had
a similar one, he (or you) would
take the two In the palm
hand, clench the hand,
other hand around that
squeeze. One of the pecans would
crack. If it was yours, the other boy
ate it; if his was crushed, you ate
it.
There was one fellow who munch-
ed pecans all through recess for two
days. He would not let any other
boy do the crushing. At last, a dis-
satisfied loser, who was bigger, took
the pecan away from him—and the
secret of his success was found.
The pecan weighed about half a
pound. He had cut a tip off, used a
hairpin to remove the contents and
had refilled it with molten lead.
Naturally, the pecan wouldn’t break
unless hit with a sledge hammer or
something of the sort.
Another little thing—though it
wasn't little at the time—was the
circus season. Not one but two cir-
cuses were coming to town in the
space of 10 days. I could afford a
general admission ticket to only one
of the shows. Which should it he;
Sells-Fioto or Adam Forepaugh? I
obtained every piece of highly-color-
ed literature that the rival attrac-
tions issued and studied the pictures
and pondered on the long words,
such as "breath-taking, death-defy-
ing spectacle", “mighty, man-eating
kings of the jungle” and, after
weighing all the evidence, decided
in favor of Adam Forepaugh. I have
never regretted the decision. It was
tlie greatest circus I ever saw. Of
course, the fact that I was only 11
years old might have had something
to do with this judgement.
Another Taylor occurence was my
achieyement in probably setting a
world’s record for eating sweet po-
tatoes. One Sunday afternoon, 1
visited a neighbor family and the
big oven of the kitchen stove was
filled to the brim with baked yams.
The skins had split and the juices
had oozed out. When the sun sank
that afternoon, there were no pota-
toes left. The ships of Xerxes at
rocky Salamis or the host of
Sennacherib had not destroyed more
utterly. Of course, I did receive
some assistance from my younger
sister and two small hoys of the
neighbor family. I am sorry that the
exact statistics on this feat of mine
were not preserved for the envy and
admiration of all future ages.
It was at Taylor that a schoolmate
covertly indicated a man who was
passing and whispered, “He's been
in the pen." I turned and looked at

maintained a household for a depen-
dent father or mother. In order to
meet the test of actual support and
maintenance ws head of a family,
the benefactor must furnish more
than one-half of the support and
maintenance.
The term "in one household” or-
dinarily means under one roof, hut if
a father is absent on business or a
child or other dependent is away at
school, or on a visit, the common
home being still maintained, the
head of family exemption would
still apply. Where u parent is obli-
gated to maintain his dependent
children with relatives or in a board-
ing house while he lives elsewhere,
the additional exemption may still
apply, if, however, without necessity,
tlie dependent continuously makes
him. He was the first convict (or,
rather, ex-convict) I had ever seen
and his appearance is vivid even
now: he was a little stooped, with good friends and relatives who was
hard features, hair still stubbly on' so kind and good during my illness.
case. The same considerations apply
to tlie staius of a taxpayer because
of support furnished to his fathar-in-
law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law,
and sister-in-law. First cousins by
blood, and cousins of lesser degree,
are not regarded as so “closely con-
nected by blood relationship,” as to
give rise to a head of family exemp-
tion.
A legal guardian who may main-
tain and support in his home a de-
pendent ward is not entitled to the
personal exemption as head of a
family if the ward was not connected
with him by relationship of blood,
marriage, or adoption; nor is a tax-
payer entitled to exemption as head
of a family by virtue of maintenance
and support of a #child not legally
adopted.

BAD MEDICINE
FOR HITLER & CO.
Some of the greatest heroes of this war must go unsung.
Buried deep in laboratories they work r,;ght and day com-
pounding bad medicine for Hitler and his cohorts. We will
never be able to say which of their discoveries it was that
tipped the scales to victory but we #
can give thanks to our men of
science and their assistants . • who
work with little respite and less hope
for glory to hasten the Axis' defeat
