Researcher gives advice
on cross breeding programs
Cattlemen should plan
crossbreeding programs
with specific purposes in
mind, according to a nation-
ally-recognized research
geneticist
"Crossbreeding can be
used to provide heterosis ia
marked vigor or capacity for
growth: and to combine and
match characteristics of
breeds with market require-
ments. feed and other re-
sources available in specific
herds." Dr I.arry Cundiff
said at Texas A&M Univer-
sity recently
Cundiff ls with the Meat
Animal Research Center of
the U S Department of
Agriculture at Clay Center.

He emphasized that the
germplasm uase mi oeef
cattle production in the U S
hits been broadened eonsid
erably in the last 10 years,
primarily as a result of
development of appropriate
quarantine facilities and pro-
cedures in Canada.
Cundiff said that when
Furopean breeds are
crossed, weaning weight per
cow exposed to breeding can
be increased about 23 per
cent, due tp advantages of
hybrid vigor on survival and
growth of Fl calves and
advantages of maternal
heterosis on reproduction
and maternal ability of cross-
bred cows
"More than half of the
increased performance was
attributable to crossbred
cows Crosses between Zebu
and Furopean breeds yield
even higher levels of hybrid
vigor.” Cundiff said

Happy Birthday
In steeply sloping or
heavily shaded areas of the
landscape where grass will
not grow well, other meth-
ods of covering the soil must
frequently be selected Ac-
cording to Bippert one of the
most satisfactory methods is
the use of groundcover
plants
Groundcover plants may
range from woody vines to
dwarf shrubs, depending on
individual needs
Aivording to the agent,
many possibilities for living
groundcovers are now avail-
able locally For shade or
partial shade. Bippert lists
vinca. Algerian ivy. English
ivy. monkey grass, liriope,
ajuga. and hypercium. For
sunns locations, she recom-
mends Asiatic jasmine,
monkey grass, creeping jum-
pers. purple leaf honey
suckle, liriope. day lilies, san-
tolina, sedura dward yau
pon. and dwarf nandina
Proper soil preparation is
needed before groundcover
plants are planted Dig the
soil at least six inches deep
[Like thoroughly to remove
grass roots Spread two to
three inches of organic
material such as peat, well-
rotted manure, or leaft mold
over the ground and shape it
into the soil
On rocky or uneven soil
w here the entire area cannot
be so worked, the agent
advised digging individual
holes Dig these deep
enough so you can fill parti-
ally with the soil mixed with
organic material before you
set the plants.
Groundcovers can be
planted anytime during the
growing season. Fall and
spring plantings give best
results if potted or canned
plants are used Keep the
new planting well watered
until it becomes established.

Herb teas cause
some side effects
Some individuals paying
quarterly estimated tax pay
ments for the first time this
year may not receive
vouchers in time for mailing
their second installment pay-
ments. due June ^..accord-
ing to the IRS
An unexpected increase in
the number of taxpayers
filing 1982 declarations of
estimated tax resulted in a
shortage of voucher and-en
velope packages mailed to
taxpay ers who use the over-
the counter Form 1 <440ES to
make the initial payment.
Additional forms are being
printed but a delay in mail
ing may result in first-time
estimated taxpayers not re-
ceiving them soon enough to
make the June 15 payment.
Affected taxpayers should
not delay their June 15
payment because they have
not received the form, warns
t he 1RS They should include
m an accompanying note or
on their check their social
security number, name, ad
dress, and an indication the
payment is for 1982 esti-
mated taxes

Some herb t-eas may have
possible side effects that are
more than just relaxing,
says Dr Gass Ryan-Crowe, a
food and nutrition specialist
on the homo economics staff
of the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service. The Tex-
as A&M University System
Reports have shown that
senna tea can cause abdo-
minal cramps and watery
diarrhea.
Deaths have even been
reported in Africa from in
gesting overdoses of senna
preparations, she adds
Chamomile, made from
flower heads, can cause ana-
phylactic shock, an unusual
or exaggerated reaction to a
foreign protein, or allergic
rhinitis in persons sensitive
to ragweed pollen, she ex-

Many herbal teas don't
have a list of ingredients, so
be sure to ask w hat the tens
