Natalia program receives grant
The Alamo Area Council of
Governments (AACOG) has award-
ed a grant of $9,750 to the Natalia
Independent School District for its
In-School youth At-Risk Program.
This program utilizes small group
and individualized instruction in
, reading and math, leads students to
: explore college options and involves
! them in special activities that pro-
L mote self-esteem and basic life skills.
This educational project is one of
the In-School Youth (ISY) activities
funded through AACOG's Job Train-
ing Partnership Act (JTPA) pip-
gram that serves eligible 14 - to 21-
year-old students who are at risk of
dropping out of school. By working
through the regional independent
school districts, the ISY program
augments the students' preparation
for the work force by upgrading their
academic levels and improving their
pre-employment skills.
The Alamo Area Council of
Governments conducts other JTPA
employment and training programs
for adults and youth — involving
classroom training, on-the-job train-
ing and job searctf activities -
throughout the 11 counties surround-
ing Bexar County.

The scholarship fund is admini-
stered by the Lindeburgh School
Association of Quihi. This social
association was granted a quit claim
deed to the land and the Quihi school
house for a total of $5.00 in 1938
from the Lindeburgh estate. The asso-
ciation has a business meeting, bar-
becue and covered dish picnic on the
first Monday of May of each year.
The association consists of ap-
proximately 100 families. The Quihi
school house was built in 1870 and is
still standing today. The association
has donated a number of items from
the school which are on display at the
Hondo museum and the University of
Texas Institute of Texas cultures in
San Antonio. Records of the associa-
tion indicate that social meetings
were conducted as far back as the late
1800's.
Both the school association and the
scholarship fund are nonprofit or-
ganizations. The scholarship fund is
dependent upon donations from the
membership of the school association
and friends of the late Milton B.
Schroeder Jr. The scholarship is
awarded for the fall and spring
semester of each year to eligible
immediate family members of the
school association, who are enrolled
in an accredited higher educational
institution.

Overall, Hondo ranked fifth place
out of the nine schools.
Six Hondo art students have won
awards at the Central Texas Regional
Scholastic Art Awards Competition
sponsored by Scholastic Magazine.
In high school competition, Jon-
athan Ybarra won a gold key in paint-
,ing, and Shauna Schoellman won
three gold keys in photography.
At the middle school level, four
students won gold keys; and being
Blue Ribbon finalists, their work will
be sent to New York for national
competition. Brian Knowles and Sue
Ann Martinez won in watercolor.
Holly Saxon won in mixed media,
and Kelley Thigpen won in pencil
drawing.
Their works can be seen at the gal-
lery of the San Antonio Art Institute,
located next to the McNay Art
Museuim, through Feb. 3rd. The
winners were recognized in an
awards ceremony on January 18th at
the San Antonio Art Institute.
Approximately 1070 works of art
were submitted from schools in South
and Central Texas, from Austin to the
Rio Grande Valley. Of these, only
139 works have been selected for
exhibitions, with eight from Hondo.
Of the 139 pieces of art work that are
shown at the regional exhibition, 53
are sent to national competition;
where their works will complete
against student works from all over
the United States.
"It is a great honor for these six
students to have their works selected
for gold keys. It is especially prestig-
ious for our art students from
McDowell to have their work sent to
Nationals'. All of the art students
from Hondo High School and
McDowell Middle School that par-
ticipated in submitting work for
Scholastic' are very talented and
deserve this recognition," said John
Bergmann, Hondo High School and
McDowell art teacher.
