Sonic Drive-In to blanket area
with red ribbons beginning Dec. 5

The local Sonic Drive-In and
Mothers Against Drunk Driving
(MADD) have teamed up for the
second year to blanket area roadways
the week of Dec. 5-11, with Red
Ribbons as a symbol of sober driv-
ing. That is thq.goal.of Project Red>
Ribbon and its "lie one on for safety"
holiday message.
Sonic is a national sponso&of Proj-
ect Red Ribbon, which is MADD's
largest public awareness campaign.
The Red Ribbon, tied to a visible
location on a motorist’s vehicle, is a
symbol of a commitment to drive
safe and sober during the holidays,
and to remind other motorists to do
the same.
Carhops at participating local
Sonic Drive-Ins will distribute Red
Ribbons to customers beginning
Dec. 5. Customers will also receive a
coupon for one free medium Dr
Pepper if, on their next visit to Sonic,
their Red Ribbon is still visible on
their car.
"Sonic’s continued involvement
with Project Red Ribbon is very
appropriate because our distribution
capabilities arc so advantageous due
to our carhop delivery directly to
customer's cars," said Nancy L.
Robertson, spokeswoman for Sonic.
"It is very generous of Dr Pepper to
offer customers who display a Red
Ribbon on their vhcicle a free me-
dium Dr Pepper on their next visit to
Sonic."
The free Dr Pepper offer is limited
IRS is holding
undelivered
refund checks
The Internal Revenue Service is
looking for San Antonio area resi-
dents whose refund checks were re-
turned as undclivcrablc by the Postal
Service last year.
Approximately 500 refunds re-
main unclaimed by San Antonio area
residents, the IRS says. The largest
unclaimed check is $11,914; the
smallest is $1. When refunds arc re-
turned by the Postal Service, the IRS
attempts to find the taxpayer and
deliver the checks, but there arc
always some who cannot be found.
The taxpayers may have moved or
changed their last names during the
year and failed to notify the IRS.
Sometimes the handwriting on tax
returns is hard to read. The best vyay
to avoid misdirected refund checks is
to use the peel-off label found in the
lax package, making any changes
right on the label.
Taxpayers who were expecting a
refund and have moved or changed
their names during the year arc en-
couraged to call the IRS at 1-800-
829-1040.

Sonic will distribute more than
three-million Red Ribbons in one
week. More than 150-million will be
distributed nationally throughout
the entire holiday season.
"The number of people killed in
impaired driving crashes has
dropped over the years, but one
death is one too many," she said.
"Project Red Ribbon is an easy
way for Sonic customers, and every-
one in the community to get in-
volved, and remind other motorists
to drive safe and sober. We want
everyone here to 'tic one on for
safety’ this holiday season," she
added.

County Democratic
chairman resigns
Jim Ferguson resigned Nov. 4, 1994, as the Democratic Chairman of
Medina County. Ferguson's letter of resignation to Bob Slagle, Chairman
Texas Democratic Party, reads as follows:
Dear Mr. Slagle:
One of my heroes of the Mexican revolution is Emiliano Zapata who said,
"Belter alone than in bad company." Those words fairly well summarizemy
decision to relinquish my position of Democratic Chairman of Medina
County. Too many of the Democratic office holders and office seekers are
racist and reactionary for me to even consider supporting them for public
office. Since the party requires chairs to support Democratic candidates
across the board, and I cannot do so, I am resigning as chairman. During the
primary season and in the general election period 1 will continue to support
progressive candidates for public office. This means defeating our Repub-
lican state representative and our Republican congressman.
If wc can re-capture those seals perhaps I'll no longer feel like the Maytag
repairman.
Sincerely,
Jim Ferguson
