academic team was awarded the third
place sweepstakes trophy at the
Pleasanton UELMeeton Sat., Feb. 24.
Twenty-five schools participated in
the meet

The second Armiial "Cinco de
Mayo" celebration sponsored by the
Medina County Crime Stoppers Or-
ganization will be held Saturday May
5, on the parking lot of the Devine
Community Center.
The gala held last year on that date
was a huge success and, with the
combined efforts of all areas of the
county, bigger and better things are

Ginnows enjoy family visit

Mrs. Kenneth Ginnow, in Hondo.
LTC Ginnow was the Combat Sys-
tems Officer on USS Leahy, a guided
missile cruiser out of San Diego,
Calif., and returned to the United
States on Jan. 20, after completing a
six-month deployment to the Persian
Gulf.
A late Christmas was celebrated by
the Ginnow family including sister
Sandra Kyle and family from Boerne
and brother Curtis Ginnow andfamily
from Temple.
Lieutenant Commander Ginnow's
next assignment will be in'Newport,
Rhode Island at the Naval War Col-
lege where he will perform graduate
level work in the National Defense
and Strategic Studies curriculum.
Sheriffs' Association to have
associate membership program
MedinaCounty citizens who would
like to join in the fight against crime
are invited to become Associate
Members of the Sheriffs' Association
of Texas, said Sheriff Wesley Scott.
The Sheriffs' Association of Texas
is 113 years old and a professional and
educational organization dedicated to
the preservation of peace and the
protection of the lives and property of
the citizens of Texas, according to the
Sheriff.
The Associate Membership pro-
gram was begun to provide citizens
with an opportunity to lend their sup-
port to more effective law enforce-
ment and to better help local Sheriffs
protect the lives and property of citi-
zens.
"We arc inviting the public to help
uS better serve them by joining the
fijght for effective law enforcement,"
Sheriff Scott said. Medina County
residents should soon receive mem-
bership Applications in the mail. "It is
difficult to get an application to ev-
eryone who might want to join the
Sheriffs' Association of Texas as an
Associate Member," the Sheriff said.
" If you don't receive an application by
mail, you can come by the Sheriffs
Department, or you can send your
name, address, and check ($20 for
individual membership) to the Sher-
iffs’ Association of Texas, Post Office
Box 4488, Austin, Texas 7865-4488.
Membership dues used are to up-
grade, professionalize, and train
Sheriffs and other law enforcement
officers to protect the men, women
and children of Texas. All Associate
Members will receive a wallet mem-
bership card, two window decals, a
subscription to our quarterly publica-
tion, The Texas Lawman, and $1,000
Accidental Death and Dismember-
ment Insurance.

bring a sack lunch, if they wish, at-
tend the prayer sendee and eat
their lunch in the annex. The invita-
tion is extended to all faiths in an
effort to unite all women, men,
boys and girls of the community.
The women of St. Paul will be.
serving juice, coffee and cookies
throughout the day, said Marian
Lindeburg, 1990 Prayer Chairman.
On Thursday, Feb. 8,1990, the Cub
Scouts of Pack 370 celebrated the
birthday of Scouting with their Blue
& Gold Banquet. The theme for this
year's banquet was "Mardi Gras."
The highlight of the evening was a
"Hat Contest." Each boy designed
and made a hat which was used as
table decorations and later for the Hat
Parade and Contest. About 20 differ-
ent categories were awarded prizes in
the contest. Judges for the contest
were Mrs. Cathy Carskadden and
former Cub masters Ed Stitler and Bill
Ruff.
During the evening everyone ate a
pot luck meal, watched skits and pres-
entations from each den and awards
were given to those cubs earning
them.
Certificates of Appreciation were
presented to Mr. Harold Bryant for
being Chairman for the Scout Coun-
try Fair ticket sales, Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Carskadden for the use of their
land for a camp out for a Webelos
group and Mr. Lee Haile for accom-
panying the Webelos on their camp
out and teaching them outdoor skills.
Special guests for the evening
were: M/M Ed Stiteler, M/M Bill
Ruff, M/M Tom Carskadden, Louis
Chartier, Unit Commissioner and Mr.
and Mrs. David Bishop of Castrov-
ille. Mrs. Bishop gave a short presen-
tation on the importance of S.M.E.

Young Children Annual Conference
held at the Henry B. Gonzales Con-
vention Center in San Antonio on
Saturday, Feb. 17. The conference
was co-sponsored by the Children’s
Resources Division of San Antonio.
Keynote speaker was Dr. Amy
Freeman Lee, Chairman of the Board
of Trustees of Incarnate Word Col-
lege. Her address, "Heart of the Mat-
ter" identified the current emphasis
on education as being a "war against
ignorance" with education defined as
"learning how to live on the level of
beipg a human being."

ticipants attended three sessions of
