into the stone so they will endure the
ages and never be forgotten.
As the 50th anniversary of the end
of WW II approaches, these fallen
heroes deserve mention and remem-
brance.
The following men and women of
Medina County gave their lives
while serving their country: Vicente
Arcos Jr., Richard Been, Victor D.
tiermea, David Biediger, Larry Bie-
digcr, John C. Boog, Iris Bradshaw,
George Britsch, Austin 0. Buratte,
RobertC. Cameron, G. W. Castillio,
Setting it straight
Due to the unusual number of
fights that erupted in Hondo on
Friday, August 18, it was incorrectly
reported that Louis Ledesma, 17,
was arrested in connection with an
attack on a 15-year-old.
Ledesma was arrested for
involvement in a different conflict
which occurred a little earlier that
day in the same general area,
according to police.

A BIG CROWD... More than 360 bidders registered to participate in
the Robert George estate auction Sunday. Among the thousands of
items sold was the old wooden Indian which sat in the window of Mr.
George's Curiosity Antique Shop on Hwy. 90. It was a Hondo land-
mark for many years. Eduardo Holcomb of Del Rio, a western wear
shop owner, purchased the Indian and his chair tor $525. Holcomb
said he told his family eight or ten years ago that someday he would
own the Indian, but Mr. George refused to sell it. Sunday Holcomb
came to the auction and ransomed the old Indian.

San Antonio plans
to fight catfish farm
FEATURED SUNDAY... Sabinars
own Johnny Rodriguez will return
to the Medina County Fair for a
Sunday afternoon performance,
Sept. 17. Tom T. Hall, who will
perform Saturday evening, was
among those who encouraged
Johnny to give Nashville a try,
and helped launch him into a suc-
cessful musical career. Keith Lutz
and Country Sunrise of Hondo
will be the opening act for the
Rodriguez performance.
The San Antonio City Council is
planning a legal battle with the
owners of a catfish farm that can
consume the equivalent of one-
third of the amount of water the city
uses from the Edwards Aquifer.
The council agreed to vote on a
plan to stop the Living Waters Cat-
fish Farm, located on the Medina
River in southwestern Bexar
County, from reopening its wells.
The council wants to protect the
aquifer, San Antonio's sole source
of drinking water.
Living Waters has notified the
Edwards Underground Water Dis-
trict that it intends to reopen its
wells on September 20. *"
The catfish farm consumes about
61.000 acre-feet of water per year,
one third of the San Antonio Water
System's total usage of about
180.000 acre-feet each year.
The catfish farm was forced to
shut down its wells in November
1991, in response to litigation over
discharge permits.
Shortly after the wells were shut.
the aquifer level rose several feet
without any significant rainfall or
recharge, according to SAWS.
SAWS attorney Russell Johnson
advised the city council to authorize
the following options:
• File a lawsuit against the farm in
state district court after the new
Edwards Aquifer Authority assumes
control of the aquifer, alleging waste
of water.
• Urge the Texas Natural Resource
Conservation Commission to recon-
sider, modify or rescind the farm's
discharge permit
• Protest and oppose an Environ-
mental Protection Agency discharge
permit
• Seek an injunction blocking dis-
charge of pollutants into the Medina
River.
• Oppose the farm's application for
a withdrawal permit from the aquifer
authority.
• Urge the aquifer authority to use
its power to prevent waste, prevent
unlawful withdrawals and require
conservation and reuse.
