disability benefits and was denied
benefits. How do I appeal this deci-
tion?
A - If you wish to appeal, you must
make your request in writing within
60 days from the date you received
our letter. We assume you receive
the letter five days after the date on it,
unless you can show us you received
it later. Call Social Security if you
need help with your appeal.
Q - If I earned Social Security and
military retirement, can I get both
Social Security benefits and my
military pension?
A - Generally, there is no offset of
Social Security benefits because of
your military retirement You'll get
your full Social Security benefit
based on your earnings. For more
detailed information, call Social
Security's toll-free number, 1-800-
772-1213, and ask for the factsheet
Military Service and Social Security.

tirement benefits and still work. I
heard the amount you can earn with-
out reducing Social Security benefits
recently changed. Is this true?
A - Yes. If you're 65 but not yet 70
and continue to work, you can now
earn $12,500 in 1996 without reduc-
ing your Social Security retirement
benefits. The new law does not
change the 1996 earnings limit for
workers who are under age 65
($8,280).

because I lost my Social Security
card but I'm unable to get to a phone
during the week during normal busi-
ness hours. Can I get in touch with
Social Security in the evening?

directs you to get a replacement So-
cial Security Card.
Q - Recently, I began receiving a
Social Security disability benefit. I
also receive a disability benefit for a
private disability insurance policy.
Will the private policy affect my
Social Security disability benefit?
A - No. Your eligibility for Social
Security disability payments is not
affected by any private insurance
you may have. However, the amount
of your benefit may be reduced if you
get worker's compensation or cen-
tain other public disability payments
