sm,
piracies can happen with a little help
Julie and Justin are in many ways
typical teenagers, they want to learn
, new things and be around their
friends.
But in some very striking ways,
" they are not typical at all. Julie, 15.
' and Justin, 14, are sister and brother
and they both have a rare condition
. called microcephaly, an abnormally
small brain.
; Tlreir parents, Joseph and Sherrill
’ Nester of San Antonio, didn't have
, much hope that they would ever have
j the opportunities of other teenagers.
Julie and Justin were considered
.. profoundly brain injured.
v Because of their physical and men-
tal disabilities, Justin has had 17 sur-
. geries and Julie has had three. They
. were both labeled profoundly re-
tarded and had continuous upper res-
. piratoryinfections-a minimum of 10
. to 12 per year for each child. In ad-
, dition, Julie had seizures, in spite of
medication, and Justin was on
Ritalin. Both needed intense speech,
I! physical and occupational therapy,
. but with limited resources and old
, medical bills yet to be paid, Julie and
s Justin got older -• not better.
Julie at age 12 could only recog-
n nize her and her brother's names, and
the same with her brother.
The Nesters heard about Glenn
Doman's book, What to Do About
Your Brain Injured Child, and an-
other book, How to Teach Your Baby
to Read.
"After we began Doman's method
of teaching Julie to read, we were
able to teach her 500 words, many
phrases and some short sentences,"
said her mother. "We also purchased
all other books by Glenn Doman:
How to Teach your Baby to be Physi-
cally Superb, How to Teach Your
Baby Math, How to Teach Your Baby
Encyclopedic Knowledge, and How
to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence.
"After we read these books, hav-
t ing had success with his reading pro-
gram with Julie, and having read
' about profound brain injured chil-
_ dren and their success stories, we
.' were determined to get to the Insti-
- tute for Achievement of Human Po-
tential in Philadelphia to see what
* we could do for our children."
5 The Institute trains parents to give
3 their child an individual program to
0 work towards physical, intellectual
and physiological excellence. The
prograip must be followed seven
~ days a week, all day long.
A Spaghetti Supper benefit for Julie and Justin will
be held Saturday, July 26, at D'Hanis Nutrition Center.
To reserve a plate, call 363*7245 or 741-2207, or go
by the D'Hanis Tax Office.
Julie and Justin are the grandchildren of John J. and
Esther Nester of D'Hanis and Glenn and Rayanne
Matthews of San Antonio.
Attending a one-week lecture at
the Institute, the Nesters learned
many things about the brain: that it
grows by use, that a healthy body
helps the brain to be healthy, and that
the brain can physically grow larger.
However, in order for a brain-injured
child to work through a brain injury,
they require 10 to 100 times more of
a particular function each day than a
normal child.
In September 1994, Julie was ac-
cepted into tm intensive neurologi-
cal development program at the In-
stitute. Due to their ages, they were
quickly accepted into the program.
Julie was to be officially in the pro-
gram and Justin would shadow her.
The intensive treatment program
is designed to grow and organize the
brain. This is done by increasing fre-
quency, intensity and duration of
normal development for 12 to 14
hours each day, seven days a week.
The treatment is administered by
the mother primarily, supplemented
by the dad and a host of volunteers.
"We currently rely on seven vol-
unteers each day, down from 11 each
day in 1995 and 1996. Evaluations
and modifications to the program are
made during one-week visits to the
Institute in Philadelphia every six
months," said Mrs. Nester.
Unfortunately, the Nesters' health
insurance believes that the program
is "educational, therefore not medi-
cally necessary."
It doesn't matter that Julie is no
longer on any medication and not
having seizures, that she went two
years with only a couple of upper
respiratory infections and that Jus-
tin is no longer on Ritalin and has
had only one illness in more than two
and a half years.
"There is no doubt that one of the
outcomes of successful treatment is
a person who displays higher intelli-
gence,” said Mrs. Nester. "Within the
last couple of years, researchers right
here at the UT Health Science Cen-
ter have discovered what Glenn
Doman has known for 4(1 years: that
the brain is capable of healing itself
if given the right opportunity. Al-
ready, Julie's and Justin's brains are
showing signs of growth and are be-
coming more organized."
She offered examples:
In October 1994 Julie and Justin
could not run with both feet off the
ground. Justin's legs were rotated in
from the hip, which made walking
awkward and difficult. Julie had no
depth perception or convergence,
adding to her inability to be physi-
cally active.
Now both children can run: Justin
runs 1 1/2 miles nonstop twice daily.
Julie combines running and walking
a mile twice daily. (Running devel-
ops the cortex of the brain, greatly
increasing respiration.)
When they first began creeping
(crawling on hands and knees), Julie
could only creep about 10 meters and
need three hour naps every day.
When they finally could creep 170
meters, it took 13 to 14 minutes. Now
their fastest times for creeping is just
over three minutes and they creep
one mile daily. They also crawl,
army-style, on their bellies 1/4 mile
each day.
Crawling and creeping are very
important stages of development in
young children. The program is de-
signed to organize the lower levels
of the brain, particularly the mid-
brain, to improve neurological orga-
nization, concentration, vision, con-
vergence, mobility, language, respi-
ration, and auditory, tactile and
manual competence.
"Julie and Justin have made
progress in all these areas since they
have been on the intensive treatment
program," said their mother.
Julie has been detoxified from all
seizure medicine and no longer has
any seizures.
Both children read thousands of
words and sentences, and 75% of the
sports pages in the newspaper. They
enjoy keeping track of UTS A sports,
in addition to other local colleges and
the NBA. They are also learning
about the bones in the body, people
and places.
They now use the computer daily
for writing letters and spelling words.
They have a few penpals, family,
friends and UTSA students who
write letters to them on a regular ba-
sis, which has been very motivating
and instrumental in leaning to spell
words and write letters.
Both children have improved in all
the following areas: hearing, breath-
ing, speech, vision, physical and
manual strength; improved mobility,
appetite and language; intelligence
and interest, understanding, growth
rate and health, and their Babinski
reflex is now perfect.
The family has spent more than
$39,000 on appointment fees at the
Institute, program equipment, sup-
plies, lodging and travel expenses, in
addition to old medical bills.
"We began this with real expecta-
tions that a majority of the treatment
would be covered by insurance and/
or public assistance to children with
severe developmental disabilities,"
said Mrs. Nester. But their insurance
refuses to pay and they have been
told by at least seven charitable
groups that they are not eligible for
most programs or that they will be
put on a waiting list.
"We have exhausted our means
and the world does not look kindly
on a bankupt banker," she said.
"The progress Julie and Justin
have already achieved and the prog-
nosis for continuing improvement
are substantial," she said. "If we can
stay on the intensive treatment sev-
eral more years, the time, energy,
money and commitment will trans-
late into a lifetime of quality living
that they would not otherwise ever
live. We are in need of financial as-
sistance, volunteers and more equip-
ment and space to do our program."
The family appreciates the support
and encouragement they have re-
ceived as the program-and the chil-
dren—have progressed.
A fund has been established for the
children: Julie and Justin Nester Ben-
efit Fund, c/o Frost National Bank,
