La Coste High School
revisited by Class of '44
The old LaCoste High School
building was the scene of a nostal-
gic visit on Saturday, June 22. The
visitors were 12 members of the
Class of 1944 and their spouses
who gathered for a 47 year reunion.
This was their fifth reunion. Pre-
vious reunions were held in 1983,
1984, 1986, and 1988. Nearly eve-
rything in the old school changed
over the years, but it still brought
back many happy memories Paul
Christilles arranged to have the old
building opened for his classmates.
After visiting the school, class
members and spouses gathered at
the Swan A Railway Country Inn
for a delicious dinner served by Mr.
and Mrs. Gene Sherrer, owners of
the Swan & Country Railway Inn.
The dinner was accompanied by
lively conversation that brought
everyone up-to-date on the lives of
their classmates: Shirley Handley is
going to visit Paris, France and
Florence, Italy this summer. Clyde
and Mary E. Johnson are going to*
the 50 year memorial service at
Pearl Harbor in December.
Door prizes were awarded during
the evening. Flashbulbs going off
at the school and the Swan & Rail-
way Inn almost made this occasion
look like a photographer's conven-
tion. Class members also enjoyed a
tour of the facilities of the Swan
and Railway Inn. What they re-
membered as a beer joint has been
transformed into an elegant estab-
lishment with gracious hosts. *
Photographs and other memora-
bilia were displayed by Agnes
Echtle, Joan Christilles, Grace
Schmidt, Mary Emma Johnson, and
Shirley Handley. A beautiful floral
arrangement decoration was pro-
vided by Agnes Echtle.
The Class of 1944 had 17 mem-
bers and all of them still live within
a 100-mile radius of LaCoste.
The following class members
and spouses attended this reunion:
Paul and Joan Christilles. Agnes
Echtle, and Floyd and Myrtle Sant-
leben, all of LaCoste: Leonhardt
Otto of Castroville (We regret that
Jeanette was unable to attend due
to recent surgery); George and
Grace Etter Schmidt and Clyde and
Mary Emma Graff Johnson, all of
Hondo; Floyd and Bessie Jackel of
Atascosa; Temple and Gertrude
Friesenhahn Henry of Jourdanton;
Bill and Eunice Koenig Simpson of
Kyle; Shirley Jones Handley of
Johnson City; Ruben and Imogene
Tschirhart and Richard and Elva
Lois Biediger, all of San Antonio.
Hosts for the 47-year reunion
were Richard Biediger, Paul Chris-
tilles, and Agnes Echtle.
The 50-year reunion to be held in
1994 will be hosted by Ruben
Tschirhart, assisted by Grace Etter
Schmidt and Richard Biediger.

with young people are concerned
about self-esteem according to
Gaye Bippert, Medina Cdunty

family members, especially youth,
must be increased so that they will
have confidence to resist detrimen-

by The Home Economics Task
Force & The 4-H and Youth Task
Force in Medina County.
We know that self-esteem has a
significant effect on young people's
behavior and attitudes. We also
know that children and adolescents
today face numerous challenges as
they grow up.
A HAPPENING TO REMEMdER
The night of June 25, 1991 will he one that l shall long
cherish. Because l am sure there are those involved of
whom I have no knowledge, I wish to express publicity my
deepest appreciation to all of you who did have a part in
organizing my retirement party and who attended, sharing
hat event with me. You made that a very special evening for
me. To those of you who were unable to attend but have
expressed your feelings directly, with cards or through
other contributions, 1 am also extrememly grateful.
It is people like you that made me want to remain in this
community these many years. It has been a pleasure to work
with the many students, parents and school personnel with
whom I have been associated during my 41 years.
Thank you for your loyal support and for the memories
that will remain with me always.
