New Fountain UMC
to 'Celebrate Mission'
New Founatin UMC will welcome
Rev. Ray Light and his wife Edna
from Pinetown, South Africa, on
Monday, July 3, at 6 p.m. with a
covered dish supper.
Ray and Edna will share with us
their story of the "New" South Africa
and the role which both they and the
John Wesley School are playing
during these exciting and ever
changing times. As the senior pastor
at the Pinetwon Methodist Church,
Rev. Light was instrumental in be-
ginning the John Wesley School and
has continued to work for the high
standards which the school provides
for approximately 350 children. In a
country which struggles to erase the
scars of Aprartheid, President Nel-
son Mandela refers to JWS as the
example of what education should be
in their country.
Along with the news from their
country, they promise to give us a
special insight into what the Method-
ist Church is accomplishing in
Southern Africa.
Their presence will be an evening
you will not want to miss.
The community and churches of
Hondo are invited to share this expe-
rience.

By Preston A. Taylor
Russia has suffered enormously across the centuries. That nation
lost about 30 million people during World War II. No one knows how
many suffered horrible deaths as well as Siberia sufferings under the
Communist regime.
Russia still suffers. The "Hammer of History" has ruined the
splendor of cities across that once sprawling Empire, as well as many
break-away parts of the country today.
The streets of many Russian cities are littered with garbage all the
way from bricks to trees to smashed garbage containers.
Public telephones seldom work. Most mail never gets inside Russia
from outside the country. The departing mail seldom meets with fresh
air outside the country, unless it is registered. Public rest rooms stink,
and most houses suffer from the lack of decent facilities.
Inflation chokes the people. Two thousand percent per year is the
normal...The people are hungry. Their money system is beserk. In
fact, the ruble is no more than rubbish or rubble.
Retirees seldom receive enough to live. In fact, many on retirement
walk the streets as beggars with tin cans.
Devastation hangs over the country like a dense fog over Los
Angeles. Suicide rates keep rising. Life has become cheap. You don't
like the USA? Try Russia for a week and I betcha' your tune will
change.
