M.C. Health Unit
construction begins
Construction has begun on tha
Medina County Health Unit and
W.I.C. Program building. The project
was made possible by a $195,073.
grant from The Meadows Founda-
tion.
The Meadows Foundation is a pri-
vate foundation created by Algur H.
Meadows and his wife Virginia in
1948 to benefit the people of Texas.
Today the foundation benefits pro-
grams throughout Texas in health,
education, arts and culture, social
services and civic endeavors.
Also helping to make the project
possible was Medina Community
Hospital which donated .680 acres
near the hospital for the site.
The Medina County Health Unit is
a public health facility which pro-
vides family planning services, im-
munizations, prenatal clinics, well
child clinics, diabetic services, com-
municable disease investigation and
sanitation inspections.
The W.I.C. Program is a supple-
mental nutrition program for preg-
nant women, breastfeeding women,
infants and children. It also provides
formula for infants.
Eagle Contractors from San Anto-
nio is the general contractor for the
project and Stewart Lambert is the
architect. The building is expected to
be completed by April 10, 1990.

A surprise greeted Billie Ann Bur-
rell and sons Rick and Corey on
Christmas Eve morning. They got up
bright and eqrly and went to Billie
Ann's parents house, where her
nephew, D^an Jaks, made a short

brings future
to Hondo area
Southwestern) Bell Telephone is
placing the future in the hands - or
grounds - of Hondo. The telephone
company is burying fiber optic
cable for present and future residen-
tial and business services.
The new cable represents an in-
vestment of $375,000. It will serve
60 customers, primarily in the
Creekwood Subdivision area.
"This is the first placement of fi-
ber optic cable in the area," said
Karen O'Neill, area manager.
"Due to growth in the area, cur-
rent cable capacity is exhausted. Fi-
ber optic cable enables us to im-
prove voice transmission quality
and, with higher capacity cable in
the ground, plan for future growth,"
O'Neill said.
"Fiber optics upgrades Hondo's
status in the eyes of business and
industry," she said. "This type of
cable is the world standard for ad-
vanced telecommunicaitons. It's a
definite selling point for a commu-
nity to attract new Information Age
business." With fiber optic cable,
there is less maintenance, less elec-
tronic line noise, cheaper installa-
tion and a virtually unlimited capac-
ity, she said.
The project is to begin early in
1990 and should be completed be-
