Vehicles targeted by thieves
Only the first of four ve-
hicles stolen in Hondo in less
than two weeks has been re-
covered. One suspect has
been arrested.
1\vo of the other three late-
model pickups had the keys
left in them. The third, how-
ever, was reportedly locked.
All three vanished while
their owners were nearby, but
thus far the Hondo Police De-
partment has no direction of
travel or suspects in the thefts.
On Tuesday, May 16, a
pickup was stolen about 10:45
a.m. from a job site at 26th St.
and Ave. 1 while the owner
worked about 100 yards away.
He did not see the vehicle be-
ing driven away. The keys
were left in the vehicle.
On Monday, a pickup dis-
appeared around 7 p.m. from
the 1600 block of Highway 90
shortly after the owner had
parked and locked it.
While the driver of a pickup
went inside a convenience
store in the 1700 block of 19th
Street, Tuesday, May 23, a
thief drove off with his com-
pany vehicle around 9 p.m.
The driver had removed the
keys from the ignition, but
left them in the vehicle.
The thefts are under inves-
tigation, but so far the police
have little or no evidence
with which to work.
Hondo Police Sgt. Mark
Martinez reminded residents
to remember to be aware of
their surroundings when
they get out of their vehicle,
take the keys out and lock the
vehicle with the windows up.
’’Don’t leave bags and
purses where they are vis-
ible,” he added, “even for a
few minutes.”
Cowboys face Fayetteville in region semis
The D’Hanis Cowboys
have advanced to the third
round of the baseball play-
offs, by virtue of their two-
game sweep of Thrall last
weekend.
The Cowboys (22-6) will face
Fayetteville (22-2) in the Class
A regional semifinals starting
this evening (Thursday).
The best-of-three series
will be played at Steele High
School in Cibolo. The first
game is Thursday at 7:30.
The second game is Saturday
at 4:30, with a third game, if
necessary, to be played after
the second game concludes.
The winner of the series
will face either Thorndale or
Shiner for the right to go to
the UIL State Tournament in
Austin, beginning June 7.
Steele High School is at
1300 FM 1103 in Cibolo. FM
1103 intersects with Inter-
state 35, and can also be
reached by taking FM 1604 off
of MO East, then turning onto
FM 78, and then taking 1103.
Treehouse falls
The world will only note its
demise, but to the folks in
D’Hanis, an era has passed
with the loss of the
Langfeld-Zinsmeyer tree
house. The house will have
to be taken down after last
week’s hail storm, during
which the tree split in half.
Joe Langfeld and his
children built the tree house
in the 1970s in a huge oak
behind what is now the
Chuck and Missy Zinsmeyer
home, off FM 1796. Hosting
visitors from “Pittsburgh to
LA,” it will be remembered
as the only tree house in
town with a fireplace; a
place for telling scary
stories; a hangout for
cousins and neighborhood
kids; and a place where
birthday and slumber parties
were held. If truth be told, it
probably was witness to
more than one first kiss and
there are likely some untold
stories, as well... If only
treehouses could talk!
