We Were Soldiers, Too
As setters have sari after servng thev tane
There are no agnostics on the fang fine.
Though each offered fa prayer that he would not fa*.
Some got back home; some thev names on the wal.
When we al signed up, we each had our reasons,
But just to say *no". would be almost kke treason
So we raoed our rtght hand and signed up for the strife,
knowing fuN we*, we rragfot pay mth our kfe.
We handted our travsng. and we overcame fears.
We dealt with depression, and we weped our own tears
We were white, black, and brown, with ston just kke you.
But with a heart that beat strongly of red. white, and blue
We heard some back home, protesting fourty;
Yet tried very hard to keep our flag waving proudly.
We heard (Afferent things about what we should do.
And though we were young, we were sotters too.
You can have your opinion, and not risk the fa*.
But thank God for the sotter who answered the cal.
‘Cause whatever your stand, you've a right to say it;
But your right had a price, and a soldier has paid it.
The ‘short and wake-up* days were all counted down,
Until finally our Freedom-Bird was homeward bound.
Yet some of the memories are affecting us stilt.
And some are still dealing with wounds that won't heal.
Medals and glory we were not to expect,
But it would have been nice to have gotten respect.
We made some mistakes yet we still sometimes wonder
Why we were to blame for just serving with honor.
We didn't make policy on those foreign borders.
We were just U.S. soldiers, just following orders.
We don't have the answer to “was the pnee worth the gain7*
But one thing for sure, we’d do it ail again.
It’s not that anyone's showing off bravery.
We just believe in freedom, vs. living in slavery.
Nobody likes war, yet after 9-11,
We'd like one more shot, to try to get even.
‘Cause a olow was taken by our U.S. of A.
And we’d dig up our boots, and defend her today.
But we’re mostly back home now, just doing our task.
And you owe us nothing; we’ve not much to ask.
We don’t expect much, as a soldier or a vet,
And just a small “thanks" is as good as it gets.
And we’ve learned to be proud, as we've gotten older,
Of what we gave and received, as an American Soldier.
But we’d like to see, if you went to be fair,
That our wounded buddies be treated with care.
We know in our heart, that in their mostly quiet sufferings,
They gave beyond duty with their patriotic offerings.
As the Bible has said about the life that we spend:
There's no greater love than to give it for a friend.
So we know that our Lord is keeping good score,
Of the place and reward the soldier has in store.
And when the last soldier has gone to his sleep,
And no more children, or mothers, or sweethearts weep.
He'll all through the ages, while angels sleep,
The halls of Heaven safely keep.
