MY BURNIS LAWRENCE
Publisher
HO BERT BRITTEN )
. ..of Dunlay called Monday morning to see what
I was going to-w-rite “about the Shah leaving the
county.”
I had not intended to write anything, for there
has been millions of words said and written
already. But Ituhert had a different aspec t he was
leed off about so I will lr\ to give his view.
He feels that the public was "deliberately lied
to" bv the government. He sakl: “One day they
are telling everyone that Ihe Shah is so critically
ill that he cannot travel to Fort Worth to give a
deposition in the trail brought on by the 22
employees of Hell Helicopter Then the next day
they whisk him completely out of the country.”
Robert feels that the laws are made for
everyone and if had born an ordinary citizen of
the Cnitc'd States this would not have happened.
I can’t really argue the point except for the fact
that many, many persons in these Cnited State's
do not show up for deposit ions in court cases.
Their lawy ers do that for them.
I also do not know what information the
government bail about how important it was for
the Shah to leave. Was il more important for him
to give a deposition in a case, or to leave the
Cnited State's so that tensions could possibly
lessen? I don't know I do know that bis not giving
the deposition in Fort Worth wont hail the case,
because lawyers can alveavs get around those
technicalities.
I am happy the Shah has left the Cnited States,
but I would have allowed him to remain here
forever if he had wanted to do so I believe the
Cnited Stales government has a right to grant
anyonp the privilege of liv ing in this country and
no pipsqueak government or dictator anywhere
in the world has any right todo anything aboul it.
I’erhaps this will ease the tension. Perhaps it
will mean the hostages will he released and can
conic home It it docs than I am all for the move.
If il doesn't then I certainly don't envy
President Carter thef decision that lie must
iiicv italily make (onceijning what our comitrv will
do.

H.H.S. students made
some pretty unique requests
for that "special Christmas
gift" in a poll taken by the
Owl’s Nest last week
A large percent of the
students opted for the
usuals; clothes, cars,
stereos, money, and jewelry.
A few were a little more
ambitious and requested a
district championship in
basketball, the opportunity
to tour with a rock band and,
of course, the all important
high school diploma.
Others went all-out and
took a real long shot by
asking for snow, new school
rules and teachers, and an
all-expense paid trip to
Hawaii.
A few extra special good
boys decided to “shoot for
the stars.” They hope to find
Loni Anderson, Cherly
Tiegs, and Charlie’s angels
under their tree on Christ-
mas morning.
H.H.S. teachers had their
share of extravagant de-
mands such as; $50,000, a
new watch, a raise, peace of
mind, a big diamond ring, a
swimming pool, one day
when every student does his
homework and understands
it and, last but not least, a
counter T wo Iranian-, were in front of her and
they told the clerk they were entitled to a 10
percent discount.
The clerk did not know about such a discount
hut checked with her supervisor and was told,
That is true."
[ his lady doing the shopping was qui^e-put out
and ! will personally have to agree with her.
How ev er. there w as a check made at the Hondo
Sears store and Ramon Rachel said there was no
such policy liere-even though we dont have any
Iranians around here any way .
2-week vacation without
children, students, or argu
ments, preferably in an iso-
lated spot minus telephone
and television.
There were a few special
students who seem to feel
that they have been ex-
tremely good this year
judging by their Christmas
lists.
Ruth Rendon wishes to
have a passionate kiss and
round-the-world cruise with
Charlie Waters.
Brett Bader would like to
have his own oil well and
Scott Peden desires a gold
plated Rolls Royce complete
with leather seats, wetbar,
mink carpeting, television,
telephone and his own coat

Senior David Lynch re-
quested a machine gun, hand

ITic location was ideal for
those vviio had horses to !>c
shod or other types of
blacksmith work
1 quickly became well
acquainted with Mr Alfred
Meehler and his father and
was greatly impressed by
the tremendous muscle
development of their arms
They were very tolerant of
me and let me gawk around
Ihe shop and watch them at
their work
I learned very early to
keep my hands and fret out
of their way One day, Mr
Alfred Meehler was working
on a piece of strap iron and
while heating and fitting it
to some part of a wagon or
buggy he cut off a piece with
a chizel and it dropped on
the dirt floor near me Kid
like, I reached down and
picked it up It seared my
fingers like a branding iron!
I couldn't get rid of it fast
enough Mr Meehler said
“Why did you turn loose of it
so first was it hot1" and
chuckled at mo with a big
grin He then smeared some
sort of salve on my fingers
gave me a pat on my rear
and said "Next time you
won't pick it up. will you
Brother Davis”
Later on when I was in my
top spinning years and lost
the spinner front my tops,
Mr Meehler taught me how
to use a file and make a
spinner from a wood screw
that was an envy of my
school mates who were in
the top spinning activities of
that age
Mr Meehler would let me
use his vise, his files, and
work on my tops w henever I
came into his shop My Dad
would caution me again and
again about txong a nuisance
and in the way of. Mr
Meehler, but I don’t recall
Mr Meehler ever Ix'ing
cross with nx1 or telling me
to get out of his way or out of
his shop
Now when I pass by Ihe
location of the old Wagon
Yard and the old blacksmith
shop I remember the gather-
ings of farm and ranch
DeoDle there and two very
friendly blacksmiths who
added a lot of pleasure to the
days of my boyhood. Mr.
Alfred Meehler and his
father a pair of rugged men
who were very kind to me
