lie is assigning directors, on a volunteer basis,
to attend the meetings of various organizations in

Dm id McGuffiu attended the l.ihrars Hoard
meeting and assured those present (he Hoard has
the full support of the Chamber in obtaining a
new library building. He reported the l.ibrarv
now has 117,529.29 on hiuid toward the building
fund, a portion of which has been given over the
wars bv the Hondo Junior Servile League The
League has a give-away -planned for May where
the winner of a drawing will have a three minute
shopping spree at II.E.B.
Stuart Franke attended the Museum Hoard
meeting and passed along supportive information
to that body
Kachel also attended Intergovernmental Coun-
cil meeting on January ill.
So I will tip my hat to the new president and
say is innovations, desires and dedication will
helpjhe Chafmher and the community Last year
Jim Tomes started the Chamber membership
directors and brought about the largest member-
ship in the recent history (and I expect it also
included ancient history ) of the organization.
That number stood at 277 and I understand the
1980 membership now stands at 255, so Kamon
just might make this projected 300 total if a few
more individuals and businesses come through
with interest and monev.
FOLK COLOR HRO< IIIRES
have again been ordered by the Hondo
Chamber and I for one am ,,iad to see we will have
a replenishing of our stock of these. The first ones
were printed back several years ago and 10.000 of
them have been distributed virtually "every-
where."
If you haven't seen one. you should get by the
Chamber office in a few weeks and pick up one. It
folds to fit into a business env elope and provides a
colorful overview of our city and area.
I understand 12.000 of these have been ordered
this time and I am happy to say that the money
which will pay for them came from the Chamber's
efforts last September in sponsoring the first Fair
Day in the County I think it is money well earned
and well spent.
THERE SIIOl'LD HE
a story in this week's Anvil Herald about the
“price of every thing" at the'Medina County Fair
in September.
The executive committee met Tuesday night
and should have arrived at conclusions on which
projects will require bids and booth and
commisxjon fees as well as the prices to charge
for beer, drinks, rides etc. and how these will be
handled
Ml of this means of course that the Fair is
progressing and now when bids are called and
answers received things should begin to get in
high gear. Interest is already high, and I am
uncertain if it is because of the 1980 Fair or a
hangover from the 1979 event. But it's there and
that spells good news for a bigger and better
Fair.
There has been some difficulty in keeping
directors on the board. It seems sometimes they
are resigning faster than they can be replaced.
Yet, through all of this the enthusiasm of those
remaining board members remains high and
much is accomplished at each meeting.
\n important meeting is coming up on Monday,
February 25 when the Master Planning Com-
mittee sits down in the Devine City Hall and
decides on a permanent location as well as long
range plans. I would hope that all members of
that committee can be on hand so the vote will be
completely representative.
MEDINA SAVINGS ASSOCIATION
...nas gocten a mg jump on nusinesses in area
when it comes to sponsoring something for the
Medina County Fair in September.
Directors at their last meeting agreed to
sponsor the Medina County Fair Queen contest,
which is tentatively slated for Castroville
sometime in May.
Tentative plans call for the Fair Queen each
year to be given a scholarship as well as other
prizes and recognition.
The readily accepted sponsorship by Medina
Savings was received with a good round of
appreciation at the last board meeting.
ONE LAST ITEM
...on the Fair for this week.
Ronald McGuffin, the Western artist who docs
an outstandingly hilarious job of cartoons for our
newspaper, came by the office Tuesday to bring
another hatch of them.
. He told me- that tome September 20 he again
will take the day of the Fair to paint an oil
painting which will be donated to the Fair for
auction that day.
He did the same thing in 1979 and the painting
brought $220. However, this year I have already
made up my mind that the 1980 painting by
Ronald McGuffin will bring more than that
Right now Ronald is painting a portrait of my
rrvdher from the only good picture I bad of her
before her illness and I can hardly wait until it is
finished.
He is a fine artist and if vou want a portrait, a
painting of vour home or something else special
just give him a call. Hell do it and do it right.
And thanks Ronald for the beautiful painting of

County has filed an appeal of
a Justice Department ob-
jection to the proposed new
commissioner precincts.
The request to stay the
order setting commissioner
lines on the current census
was filed with a Federal
court in San Antonio. Should
the request be granted the
County still could not hold
commissioner elections this
year, but would be able to
base new commissioner pre-
cincts on the 1980 census
The appeal of the Justice
Department rejection of the
proposed new commissioner
precincts was filed with a
Federal Court in Washing-
ton, D.C. That appeal claims
that precincts are based on
the one-man, one-vote princi-
pal established by the Jus-
tice Department and asks
the court to approve^ the
plan.
County Judge Jerome
Decker said that should the
District Court deny the re-
quest, the County is pre-
pared to appeal the case to
the U S. Supreme Court.
