Most rr.ed.i peupie favor legislation
which would extend protection against
these so-called third-party searches to
aii Americans, not merely to people who
are engaged in passing aiong informa-
tion to the public
This position is at odds with the
Carter administration s support for a
much narrower bill, one that does cover
*onl> persons engaged in public com-
munication

Our opinion remains that any bill ap-

.- ..-.acceptable and. to us. embarrassing.
The "ill now making its way through

legislation If a bill similar to the one
approved b> the subcommittee does, in-
deed. become law some das.- we mas
find we have gained greater protection
from searches, but at the expense of a
public resentful of being left out in the
cold.
The bill is quite attractive, especially
that part of it which requires law en-
forcement officials seeking information
to resort to a subpoena - which gives a
person holding the information notice
and the opportunity to object in court-
rather than a search warrant, which
may be executed with no prior notice.
Why not, then, give this protection to
all our country's citizens? We suggest
there is no reason.

But after this weekend. I can think of one good thing about
the ever-rising price of gas
You remember how central air conditioning made front
porch chats with your neighbors and eavesdropping in on
household "disagreements " virtually extinct0
Well. I think the high cost ot transportation will rum
weekend trips and nights-out-on-the-town. especially after
our short trip into San Antonio in a Dodge van. paying the
babysitter, and buying dinner for two Our pocketbooks
were nearly bare
And. of course, we weren't the only ones driving sixty
miles just to eat out Lots of people do it. and lots more
people drive to San Antonio, or Uvalde, or Mexico, just to
■ "have a good time "
America is a very mobile society, and we just take it for
granted that we can drive wherever we want to go It's
nothing to hop in the car and drive halfway *11- me
county, or state for that matter just to see a -bow nr do
"-ome shopping
But now gasoline prices at last count I was paying 5: 14
per gallon, and even at 30 miles to the gallon., that hurts
have hobbled us. and we've started to think twice about
these “short trips" we've been so casually taking
Since it will be more economical 1 think more people will
go back to less frivolous entertainment which my husband
,has been telling me to do since Day One like play ing card-,
watching television with friends, and more local get
togethers. where we can enjoy the company of each other,
rather than our beloved automobiles
Maybe we can get back to the "good ole days when we
had the cheapest entertainment available - ourselves
It may even start a whole '‘new" fad of front porch chats

There's been a lot of talk about the Beeferendum being a
government program that cattlemen should turn down Fact
is. cattlemen had better recognize the realities of
government and its irfvolvement with agriculture and quit
being naive Like it or not. the US. Federal Government
now sets meat import quotas, inspects your product,
regulates the use of animal pharmaceuticals and even taxes
you for income you make on the cattle you produce
Cattlemen and the beef industry are already caught up in the
government tangle
Passage of the Beeferendum would at least give
cattlemen some clout as they bump heads with government-
funded consumer groups, government-funded anti-beef
nutrition groups, and others who threaten our industry.
Yes. there are some individual farm and ranch organiza-
tions who make some effort to promote beef and protect the
interests of cattlemen as they best can. But no single group
now in existence has enough money to do the job that needs
to be done. The Beef Board, created by passage of the
Beeferendum, will have enough money to expand foreign
markets, promote the nutritional value of beef, combat beef
substitutes, fight anit-beef propaganda and counter the
extreme highs and lows in the cattle cycle. The Beef Board
will be made up of cattlemen, and they’ll have the kind of
power it takes to meet the opposition head-on.
Whether you think the Beeferendum is government or not
doesn’t really matter The important thing is to recognize
that cattlement don’t have enough force now to influence
factors that affect them. It’s important that they take
advantage of this opportunity to put some power behind
their punch If the Beeferendum fails, cattlemen will have to
admit that they were too scared of power to grab hold of
some when it was offered to them
