Alcohol fuel can answer all these questions
1 he Mother Karth News 'It i magazine s research team has
for over a year been studying and promoting the use of
alcohol fuel as an alternative source ol energy And they're
not keeping secret the things they have learned They have
organizer! a down to earth practical seminar format and are
traveling around the countrv teaching the process to others
Recently, the team presented a seminar in Corpus Christi
which was attended by some 200 farmers and other
interested persons Irom all over the state, including this
reporter and John Reitzer
Research team member. John Vogel, presented informa-
tion and slides covering construction of equipment, milking
mash, distillation, and applying for a license After the slide
and question and answer program, a team member was on
hand to demonstrate the operation of Mother's traveling still
and alcohol-powered pickup
Making Mcohol Fuel
Alcohol fuel can be made from almost anything: corn,
sorghum, sugar beets sugar cane; potatoes, fruit, and future
potential raw materials will include such items as weeds,
garbage, crop residue, even brush' Right now. the most
practical crop is sugar Ix-ets because they are readily turned
into alcohol and they give a high return of alcohol per acre:
Corn and other such grains must tie ground to expose
starch granules which must tie broken down into sugars
through the action of yeast or enzymes which are added to
the meal along with water After it is cooked and fermented,
the mash residue had nearly three times the nutrients of the
original grain This mash residue is the by-product of alcohol
production which is used as animal feed as a supplement to
regular feed
In one process the liquid which is removed from the mash
is placed in the still and Ixirled to remove the alcohol from the
water I Alcohol vaporizes at a lowei temperature than

The vapors are forced up t hrough a pipe which intersects a
second pipe about midway This second pipe is packed with
some material such as plastic (x-llets which leaves from 60 to
90 percent air space The pipe is also fitted with two cooling
aids, one near the middle and one at the top Thermometers
are fitter I into the pipes at these [xiints also so that the
temperature inside the pi|>e o- column can lie carefully
monitored The temperature at the midsection must be kept

ALCOHOL
pUEL STILL
Vapors rise and arc forced into the second column and
begin to condense on the packing and drop back down the
column But other vapors from the Ixnler force the vapors
back up Water vapors condense and fall to the dosed
chamber at the bottom of the column while the lighter
alcohol vapors continue to rise Another chamber at the top
of the packed column condenses the alcohol vapors into liquid
jind the alcohol is siphoned off into a storage unit
Ihitting the Fuel to l so
Modifying a car or pickup engine to burn alcohol fuel
requires making relatively simple changes in the carburetor
main jet, the idle jet and t inxc The research team also offers
additional suggestions regarding compression ratio changes,
fuel preheating, air preheating, cold weather starting tips
and other ideas that help make alcohol very economical.
But airs and trucks are not the only engines that can be
run on alcohol fuel: tractors, mowers, chain saws and home
heating furnaces are among the many other uses possible.
, Economics
Aside from the fact that alcohol fuel can be made from
spoiled grain, let’s look at some of its other good points.
Alcohol fuel has an octane rating roughly 16 points higher
tha premium gasoline which results in more power, greater
efficiency and better economy Engines tend to run slightly
cooler on alcohol, and after a period of time, alcohol will
actually clean carbon deposits out of engines previously run
on gasoline
Mother's research team ran a test on a New York City taxi
cab which was outfitted with all pollution control devices
required by the EPA using gasoline, then after removing all
pollution controls from the engine they tested the air using
alcohol. The taxi ran more than 90 percent cleaner on alcohol
than on gasoline
W here's tbe'H'at eh"
It sounds too good to be true, so there's bound to be a‘
catch you have to have a license to make “white lightning”.
Before you get" started you need to contact your local
Alcoholic Beverage Commission officer to find out about local
and state requirements, and you also must submit a letter to
the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
outlining your plans
According to John Vogel, Texas is one of the most lenient
states in the country when it comes to obtaining a permit.
The Corpus Christ i area Texas A B( ’ representative, who was
at the seminar, said that Texas law presently requires a $100
per year permit fee Proof that each 100 gallons of alcohol
produced is denatured with at least one gallon of gasoline to
make it unfit for human consumption is a minimum require
ment guideline. ,
And lhere’s paperwork. The law requires that records
must be kept on production, denaturing and disosal (use) of
each gallon of alcohol produced
V0gal said that alcohol-related laws are made by the
legislature, so there's no need to jump on your local ABC
officer’s back regarding the laws lie suggested that anyone
interested in alcohol fuel production contact his legislator.
He said that demand in a number of other states has brought
about major changes in state alcohol manufacturing laws.
Time Has Come
The first vehicles ever invented were run on alcohol In the
1980's and 40 s major companies such as International-
Harvester and John Deere advertised alcohol-powered
tractors and trucks But cheap, abundant supplies of gasoline
brought about a change to gasoline-powered vehicles, and
alcohol power became a thing of the past
In these days of uncertain supplies, high prices and foreign
dependence for oil. maybe this par. of our past has just come
into its own time
