Tax receipts fall sharply
Highland Lakes Blue-
bonnet Trail brochures have
also arrived. Dates are April
4-5 and April 11-12 Austin
Sportsfest is being held
March 22-April 5. We have
the Festival Events
schedule.
David Gantt, Bryan, Tex-
as, came by for cards, bro-
chures and vacation ideas.
David was on Spring Break
and wanted to make the
most of it. He is from a
northern state, but attend-
ing college at A&M.
Hondo's sales tax receipts
check fell sharply this month
as compared to last year at
this time, but State Comp-
troller Bob Bullock said re-
porting changes could have-
been some of the cause.
The check for the period
ending March 3 was
$6,455.78 as compared to
$20,713.75 last year.
Bullock said most cities,
received smaller payments
this month compared to
March of last year because of
a change in the agency’s
accounting period and pro-
cessing timetable bul that
generally 1981 payments to
cities are running well ahead
of the 1980 rebates for the
first three months
This was true in Hondo's
case because total 1981 fig-
ures show the city has
received $40,477.94 as com-
pared to $35,156.97 for the
same period in 1980. This is
still a 15 percent increase for
the year.
Castroville received
$2,777.9F compared to last
year's $3,484.53. This runs
the city to a total of
$11,629 88 for the year, a
whopping 51 percent in-
crease over the 1980 total.
Devine pulled a bigger
check than Hondo this
month, receiving $7,328.88
However, that was quite a
drop from $16,522 72. That
figure brought Devine's 1981
total to $30,269.77. a 6
percent jump over the same
period last year.
LaCoste received
$1,675.81 and now has
$3,441.26 for the year, a big
76 percent increase over the
were remembered
An article in last week's
Anvil Herald sought inform-
ation regarding the where-
abouts of Charles and
Blanche Robinson and, ac-
cording to Lillian Porter at
the Hondo Chamber of Com
merce. the response she
received was gratifying.
The quest began last week
when Mrs Porter received a
letter from David Lendahl of
Geneva. Illinois, asking for
information about the Robin
sons who he had known
while he was stationed in
Hondo in 1942.
Mrs Porter heard from
Mrs Myrtle Clements, Mrs
Russell Chapman, Mrs Jo-
sie (Rudy) Krenmueller and
Mrs. E. J Conrad.
Mrs Conrad said in her
note: "In answer to the
request to help find Charles
and Blanche Robinson. I
hope the little I know will
help Blanche Clements was
in my graduating class from
Hondo High School in 1936
She lived two blocks down
from where I lived on Flast
21st Street and I believe she
had a brother, Robert, who
lives in Hondo Hope this
helps Mr Lindahl find his
friends Sincerely, Mrs. Ft .1
iFlthelyn Ney> Conrad".
$1,954.57 total for the first
three months of 1980.
Natalia did not receive a
March check but stands
$2,083.73 for the year, some
33 percent less than the
$3,127.25 received the first
quarter of 1980
The neighboring city of
Pearsall received $11,161.58
in March and jumped its
year total to $45,201.74, still
16 percent above the 1980
figure.
Sabinal received $1,634.37
in March and now has a total
of $7,576,83 for the year.
This, however, gives them a
6 percent decrease from
1980
Uvalde's March check was
for $31,276.50 to run the
three-month total to
$144,004.47, some 8 percent
above 1980.
Bullock pointed out that
San Antonio's rebate for
March was $2 million bring
ing that city's payments this
year to $87 million, a 14
percent increase over the
1980 first quarter payments.
Statewide, the payments
have reached $23.8 million
over the first quarter of
last year, with cities having
received a total of $162.5
million in the first three
months of 1981.

How
Do You
Read It?
By Gene H. Smith
m The Bible is probably the most misunderstood,
a misused, and abused book that men have ever read. Some
“ believe that no one can ever understand it, while others
believe that only a select few can Others think that the
Bible is meaningless while (heir counterparts make it so
“ by saying that you can prove anything and everything by
it. A few don’t care; still more don’t really know if they
should.
The real puzzler to me is how 15 different religious
groups can interpret the same passage 15 different ways,
and then pretend that they are all harmoniously “one” in
o Christ. It is no wonder that so many people are turned
away from Christ, when people who call themselves
Christian’ can be so o&iously illogical and unreasoning as
o to pretend to believe that such inequalities are equal.
When Jesus said to become as little children (Matt. 18:3)
* He didn't mean for us to play "pretend” games with His
Holy Word!
While there are difficulties in interpreting some parts
of the Bible; God nevertheless intends and expects for us ®
to read and understand it: “How that by revelation He o
made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in
few words, whereby when ye read, ye may understand
my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)" (Eph. 3:3,4).
Most of our problems in understanding are from our own
hearts, and NOT from the Book For example, if you read
“ it trying to prove a particular theory or philosophy; you
o can be sure that you won’t learn the truth of the matter.
o If you study, looking through the colored lenses of
‘church doctrine’ or preconceived ideas, you will without a
° doubt find all the proof-tests’ that you want. This kind of
o approach is not only dishonest, but will not bring you the
least bit closer to God. In fact, it will surely lead to your
destruction (2 Pet. 3: 16).
On the other hand, if we approach the scriptures,
seeking honestly to know what God wants us to do, then
and only then can we be saved. The Scriptures are able to
0 “make thee wise unto salvation” (2 Tim. 3:15).
O
o Jesus said that if we hear it with a good and honest heart
and keep it, we will “bring forth fruit with patience"
® (Luke 8:15). The choice is yours!
