Bob Cleveland of S a n An-
tonio won the Hondo Golf
Club's seventh annual Labor
Day Invitational Tournament
last weekend. Cleveland throt-
tled a rally by Ralph Arrendon-
do of Kerrville to win the
championship 3-2 Monday af-
ternoon onrain-soaked fair-
ways.
Cleveland started strong
and moved out 3 up over young
Arrendondo. However, the
Kerrville golfer rallied to pull
within 1 up of Cleveland on the
13th hole. Under mounting
tension, the pair halved the
14th after Arrendondo blew a
chance to tie the match by
missing a short putt. The ball
hung on the lip of the cup but
wouldn't fall.
The San Antonio golfer
played steady golf on the 15th
and 16th holes to move ahead
2 up. Arrendondo seemed
shaken after missing the easy
putt on the 14th, and the hot
pace he had set earlier cooled.
Arrendondo could have
halved the 16th with Cleve-
land by sinking another short
putt, but he missed it to go
down 3-2. Just to prove to
himself that he could1 make
the putt, Arrendondo sunk it
twice in quick succession after
the match was over.
Cleveland took a small tro-
phy home with him, but left
his name on two handsome tro-
phies which will remain in the
local club house. Both of the
latter trophies were provided
by pros; one by former club
pro Chas. Finger, and the oth-
er by the current club pro, Vir-
gil Krenmueller.

flight, and after dropping his

Cleveland got into the
championship match by beat-
ing Cliff Sadler, Jr. 3-2 Sat-
urday. He then beat Ralph
Artendondo's father, Tommy,
2 up before disposing of A. Gu-
tierrez 5-4.
Arrendondo, meanwhile, o-
pened Saturday by clobbering
Tom Connally, 8-7, and fol-
lowed that up with a 4-3 win
over Bob Abbott, He then
sneaked by Bill Nichols 1 up
to win the right to meet Cleve-

REGULAR MEETING
3rd Monday Each Month
Viertel began working the
Owls two weeks ago in twice -
a-day sessions. With the start
of school Tuesday, the grid-
ders are down to their tegular
season practice routine of once
a day.
The Owl coaching staff
faces a rebuilding task this
year, and didn't begin practice
with any hopes of finishing ve-
ry high in the standings. While
he may have hoped for some
surprises once practice got un-
derway, Viertel, says none
have come along. If anything ,
he's a little disappointed in
some of his charges.
Once tonight's scrimmage
is behind them, the Owls have
only one week left to get rea-
dy for a tough Del Rio club.
The Owls open the season one
