FIRE STATION NO. 3
Firs Station No. 8. located on
Keith and Jordan Road, is
history in the making. The first
public bidding erected since
the township of Rose Hill Acres
came into being 21 yearsago.it
is the result of combined efforts
of the Lumberton Volunteer
Fire Dept, and the inhabitants
of the small town located on
90-09 Hhray.
Fearing a major fire would
occur when a train Mocking the
highway would prevent them
from reaching it, the fibfhen
wanted to find an adequate
location south of the track to
establish a protective base in
South County. They had the
fire truck but no place to put it.
Contracting Mayor Henry
ocnoemeia, me L^p&nment
asked tile feasibility of building
a fire station on the city-owned
property. When the council
granted permission, plans for
the first phase of the project
were drawn up.
Obtaining a suitable site and
the plans required brains. The
second half of the project
required brawn. Amateur pain-
ters, carpenters, mechanics,
electricians, and general lac-
keys worked extra hours to add
the finishing touches that made
Hie station a reality.
Although an observer in
passin can still see volunteers
swinging an axe cutting away
brush or testing brakes on the
fire truck, additional volun-
teers are needed.
“The station hss already
answered its first fire alarm,"
J.D. Wheeler, a volunteer fire-
man and spokesman for the
group, saiil, “Last week a
portable building mi Cooks
Lake Road caught fire and was
quickly extinguished."
“This week,” the fireman
continued, “two fires occurred
simultaneously with only five
firemen available. The grease
fire in North Lumberton was
controlled with a fire extinguis-
her, but a building on Cooks
Lake Road was out of control
when the firemen arrived. So
much damage had occurred
that probably the structure is
beyond repair.”
The Altar Society of Infant
Jesus Catholic Church will bold
a garage sale Oct. 10-11 from 8
a.m. - 5 p.m. on those dates.
Ramona Orr of Lumberton is
director.
The traditional frozen gumbo
available in quarts will also be
for sale at DoDinger Hall locat-
ed on the church grounds.

Four senior citizens celebrat-
ed September birthdays last
week at the center. Vergie
Davis reported that Odis Mc-
Cormick, Johnnie McGee, Shei-
la Mae Leatherwood, and Ger-
tha Blaisdell were honored with
a party.
The U.M.W. of Woodcrest
Methodist Church furnished
the refreshments.

Margie Long, sister of Blan-
che McKenxie of Rose Hill
Acres, was hospitalized at Doc-
tors Hospital in Silsbee last
week after being injured in a
fall. She has now returned to
Bur Mont Nursing Home where
she resides.
The Hardin County Cancer
Society will meet in the Red
Room at the County Court-
house, Oct. 8 at 7:00 p.m. for a
business session. Flans for pro-
jects for the year will be
concluded, according to Fleta
Coe, secretary of the board.
Due to certain unforeseen
circumstances, Vi St. Ores,
president of the L L L Club was
host to the members at her
home on Dogwood Lane Sept.
27.
The Fellowship Hall and
Kitchen of Fletcher Emanuel
Baptist where the Club usually
meets was being remodeled.
The dub members were de-
lighted, both with the pros-
pects of a new face lift to their
meeting place and being able to
meet in the delightful pine-tree
setting of the St. Ores home.

heretofore fished in the Sabine
Lake salt water areas on the
Louisiana side need not dispair

Recent Louisiana fishermen
visiting in Texas caught drum
and extremely large croakers
last weekend in the main cur-
