Broccoli or Brownie-let children decide!
“Left to their own devices, children
instinctively know when to eat ad
how much food is required to satisfy
their hunger,” says Dr. Timothy
Brewerton, Department of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences, Medical
University of South Carolina. “The
solution is not to control every mor-
sel that goes into your child’s mouth,
but to be flexible and to work with
your child to establish sensible eating
habits that will last a lifetime.”
Some parents worry about the nu-
trition their kids get at school and
other places. School lunches are nutri-
tional and adequate for growing
healthy bodies. But are they eating
what they should?
Work with vour kids:
4 Offer them variety and balance
from the four major food groups in a
family-style setting, then let them de-
cide on what foods and amounts go on
their plates.
4 Allow snacking. Snacking is
fine as long as it is not all sweets or
in excess. However, it you’re con-
cerned that “junk” food snacks are be-
ing eaten without discretion, fill your
cookie jar with unsweetened graham
crackers or substitute a candy bar with
a low-fat granola bar.
4 Designate a section of the refrig-
erator or cupboard as a “kids shelf.”
Chikfcen love to have something to
call their own, especially when it is
suitable. This way parents can moni-
tor eating habits of their children,
while still letting them make then-
own, selections.
4 Share the responsibility of main
meals by planning menus together.
This allows your children to maintain
independence by making meal deci-
sions with your guidance.
In addition to giving your children
more freedom to make food choices.
Dr. Brewerton also recommends in
this report from Metro Press Sources:
4 Teach portion control by exam-
ple. As role models, parents can dem-
onstrate what is an “acceptable” help-
ing. It’s better to have the kids ask for
seconds than to instill the concept of
large portions up front
4 Never use manipulative tactics
to coerce you- children into eating cer-
tain foods. And don’t resort to clichd
phrases- such as “Children are starv-
ing in China, so clean your plate”-to
get your children to eat This invites
control struggles, adding to the stress
of the situation and often causing
them to rebel even more.

SCHOOL CHILREN NEED DIRECTION TOWARD NUTRITION-
These children during lunch hour at the Livingston Elementary cafete-
ria seem to be enjoying their lunches. Parents should be flexible in es-
tablishing good eating habits that will last a lifetime.
