That and finding opponents who
don’t cast a very long shadow.
Limiting Navasota, a team with
no starter taller than 6-foot-2, to 1-
for-16 shooting from the field in
the third quarter, and just 13 second-
half points, the Bees turned Thurs-
day night’s Class 4A Area round
playoff game in Texas Southern
University Gym into a 77 to 42
romp.
Big quick
“Big quick athletes are better than
small quick athletes any time,”
Mike Dacus, coach of Navasota’s
third-place playoff qualifier from
District 18-AAAA, said.
“We missed some free throws and
did some things that could’ve made
it closer. But I don’t know if we
could have ever beaten them or
PA Lincoln
Lincoln, the 23-8 District 20-
AAAA champion, will advance to
the Region III quarterfinals.
Darrius Brannon, Lincoln’s 6-
foot-9 senior who has signed to
play for the University of Houston,
scored 13 of his game-high 15
points in the second half when
teammates began to lob the ball
over the smaller Ratter defenders,
almost at will.
“They got the ball inside to the
big guy,” said Coach Dacus, his
team bowing out at 18-14 for the
season. “They were trying to go in
all night, and they really got what
they were trying to do in the second
half.”
Blocked shots
Brannon, who blocked four shots
and dished out seven assists, pulled
down nine rebounds to lead Lincoln
to a 43 to 29 edge on the boards.
Lesley Harmanson scored 14
points and passed off for five assists
to go with five rebounds. Larry
Jones and Erie ‘Tank" James each
scored 12 points for Lincoln and
Coby Hamilton added 10 points off
the bench. Hamilton, James and
Kenneth Vaughn (two points) each
had five rebounds.
Navasota, meanwhile, was led by
junior Sammy Douglas, who scored
10 points. Junior Jerry Harrison,
the Rattlers’ tallest listed starter at
6-2, scored nine points.
Jeremy Blue, Navasota s leading
scorer with a 15-point average, hit
just I-of-10 shots from the floor
and scored just four points.
"They were in his head big
time.” Coach Dacus said. "He
wasn't worth anything.”

Navasota Rattlers
Overall, Navasota hit on 25 per-
cent of its shots 15-of-59), includ-
ing just 2-of-13 from 3-point range.
Lincoln, shooting mostly layups,
was accurate 69 percent of the time
(33 of 48), including hitting 10-of-
12 in the telling third quarter.
“Lthink^MMMH 4>d a great job
stepping itra^HKftnse," Lincoln
CoaarriemirHenderson said. “They
(the Rattlers) wanted to rip and run
and they got a spurt right before the
half. We went in at halftime and
talked about what we wanted to do.
“The kids just did a real good job
of stepping up in the second half,”
he said.
Lincoln led
Lincoln had led by as many as 16
points, 28 to 12, early in the sec-
ond quarter, but the Rattlers got
three steals off their press and a 9-0
run midway through the period to
cut the Lincoln’s lead to seven, 32

It was a 10-point, 39 to 29, dif-
ference at halftime, and neither team
scored the first three minutes of the
third quarter. But Vaughn ended that
when he found Brannon under the
basket with 4:49 left in the third.
The big fellow’s basket touched
offa 13-0 Lincoln spurt in the next
one minute and 35 seconds. Bran-
non passed to James for an easy
bucket, and Hamanson lobbed to
Brannon for a layin. Harmanson got
a steal and fed Joey Lavergne for a
layup, then Harmanson sailed in
from the right wing for a layup-and-
one, and finally Harmanson got a
defensive board and fed Rossi
McNeal for another layup.
It was 52 to 29 with three min-
utes and 15 seconds left in the third
and the Rattlers were not only done,
they were tasting a little like fried
chicken.
Two Douglas free throws finally
gave Navasota its first second-half
points with 2:51 left in the third,
but Lincoln outscored its opponent
8 to 3 the rest of the period.
When Brannon scored Lincoln’s
first seven points of the fourth quar-
ter and fed Jones for a layup fix-
points eight and nine, Lincoln led
by 31 points, 69 to 38, with 4:31
left in the game.
“I felt they were more athletic
than we were,” Henderson said,
praising the Rattlers. “However,
we’re more skilled in basketball.
We’ve got a lot of weapons, a lot
of basketball talent.
“I felt like in the second half, our
sill took over,” the Lincoln mentor
