One lost, two saved
To the editor:
I am the great-grandmother of
Dylan Scott, who was murdered
He died on Jan. 14 due to head in-
juries
I recently lost my son, Marlin
Blackburn, due to Alpha 1 He
didn't take care of himself because
he was so depressed over losing
Dylan lie got pneumonia and lost
what little use of his lungs he had
He was waiting on a lung transplant
that could have saved his life
Don't Like your organs with you.
Leave them here and saxc lives
1 am asking all of the support of
Polk County to get this person con-
victed of this crime There is not a
day that goes by that I don t re-
member the great times I had with
my great-grandchild and son 1
don't believe I can ever get over
this I get to hoping it is all a
dream
There recently was a piece in the
paper for live benefit fund of Marlin
Blackburn. I ant upset tliat they did
not prim the part about leaving
your organs here, don't take them
with you I want to know why Sav-
ing lives is very important There
arc lots of people who may need a
lung, a liver, kidney, heart. My
great-grandson donated his organs
and saved two lives. 1 think that is
w onderful.

Watch for the signs
Dear Annie: Would you please
prim something about child abuse?
I think the subject is more
important than etiquette questions
or argumrnts with the in-laws. If
your readers knew more about the
symptoms and what to do, perhaps
a child's life could be saved. Maybe
someone might not have to go
through the pain we suffered
attending our 2-year-old nephews
funeral.
My nephew was brutally beaten
by his mother's boyfriend. Some of
us suspected there was abuse, but
we were afraid of alienating the
boy's mother and never seeing him
again, so we u<id nothing.
1 think it would be great if you
would make un effort to let people
know the signs that indicate abuse.
More communities need to get
involved; we need to protect our
future. - Grieving Aunt in Iowa
Dear Aunt'.: Our hearts go out
to you. We all want to save those
children who are being abused, yet
it is difficult to confront family
members arid make such
accusations. It is important to
understand that reporting child
abuse will not destroy a family. It
will protect the child and press the
family to get help. We checked
several Web site:*, and here is the
information we found:
Signs of Pihysical Abuse:
Bruises, welts or swelling; sprains
or fractures; burns; lacerations or
abrasions.
Signs of Sex ual Abuse:
Difficulty in walking or sitting;
torn, stained or bloody clothing;
pain or itching in the genital area;
bruises or bleeding nn the external
genital area; sexual ly transmitted
diseases; pregnancy.
Behavioral signs of abuse
include loss of appetite, eating
disorders, extreme vrithdrawal or
aggressiveness; recurrent
nightmares; disturbed sleep
patterns; regression to infantile
behavior such as bedwetting or
thumb-sucking; fear of a particular
person; unusual interest in or
knowledge of sexual ma tters.
Signs of Neglect; Lack of
adequate supervision, nutrition or
shelter; poor hygiene; inappropriate
dress; infrequent attendance in
school; unattended medical or
dental needs.
Signs of Emotional Abuse or
Neglect: Uncomfortable with
physical contact; low se If-esteem;
behavior extremes, such as
appearing oi/crly compliant and
passive or very demanding and
aggressive; dramatic behavioral

changes, destructive or antisocial
behavior; poor relationships with
peers; lack of self-confidence;
unusual fears for the child's age;
inability to develop an emotional
bond with others.
What can you do? First,
recognize that any of these
behaviors can also be seen in
normal children even if no abuse is
taking place. However, if you
notice a dramatic change in a
child's behavior, or you have spent
enough time in the child's presence
to believe that abuse may be taking
place, call the police or any child
welfare agency in your area and
report it. You can do so
anonymously. If you are worried,
but are not certain ttaire is any
abuse, try to befriend "the'parents as
well as the child. Ask how they are
doing. Offer to baby sit. Ask if they
need anything.
