Congressman to address local Farm Bureau
LIVINGSTON - Congressman
Jim Turner will be the guest
speaker at the Polk County Farm
Bureau’s annual convention Oct. 19
at Cho-Yeh Conference Center.
A covered dish dinner will begin
at 7 pjn. and the program will fol-
low. Farm Bureau members are to
bring food for their family and
guests. Polk County Farm Bureau
will furnish drinks.
Polk County Farm Bureau Presi-
dent Allan Eggleston urges all
Farm Bureau families to attend and
be a part of the business meeting
and fun time, which includes thaw-
ings fopr door prizes.
Elected in 1996 to represent the
2nd Congressional District, Turner
is a member of the National Secu-
rity Committee and the Govern-
ment Reform and Oversight Com-
mittee. He also serves as regional
whip, one of the members respon-
sible for coordinating Democrats in
the Texas delegation.
Turner is a member of the “Blue
Dog” Coalition, a group of moder-
ate and conservative Democrats
dedicated to fiscal responsibility,
and several other caucuses, includ-
ing the National Security Caucus,
the New Democrat Coalition, the
Congressional Spoilsmen’s Caucus
and the Rural Health Care Coali-
tion.
His commitment to fiscal re-
sponsibility and economic growth
have been recognized by the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce, the Na-
tional Federation of Independent
4‘H'ers win state fair honors
Polk County Youth had tremen-
dous success exhibiting their ani-
mals at the State Fair of Texas in
Dallas last week. At the beginning
of the week, market lambs were
shown. David Barton of Livingston
4-H placed sixth in his class with
his fine wool cross lamb. Todd
Harris of Livingston FFA showed a
medium wool cross lamb as well.
In the broiler show, Polk County
youth also did well. Kristen Wood
of Livingston 4-H placed fourth and
seventh with her chickens. Jared
Wiggins of Livingston 4-H and
FFA placed fifth and 10th. Stephen
Wood of Livingston 4-H and FFA
placed ninth with his broiler pen.
Keil Davis of Livingston 4-H
placed 13th with his chickens.
Business and the League of Private
Property Voters.
Before his election to Congress,
Turner served for six years in the
Texas Sena : and four yea s in the
Texas Hv use. In the Senate, he was
recognized as an outstanding legis-
lator by a number of statewide or-
ganizations, including the Texas
Youth Commission, the Combined
Law Enforcement Associations of
Texas and the Texas Association for
the Education of Young Children.
While in the Senate, Turner also
served as chairman of the Texas
Commission on Children and
Youth and as a member of the Se-
lect Committtec on Public Educa-
tion.
Turner earned his bachelor's and
master’s degrees in business and his
law degree from the University of
Texas at Austin. He served in the
U.S. Army, attaining the rank of
captain. In his hometown of Crock-
ett, Turner has served as mayor and
president of the chamber of com-
merce and has been a dc.»con and
Sunday school teacher at the First
Baptist Church of Crockett
Turner and his wife, Ginny, have
been married for 26 years and have
two children. John, 23, is attending
Yale Law School and Susan, 21, is
a junior at Southern Methodist
University.

ONALASKA - The jury sum-
moned to appear at 9 a.m. Thurs-
day, Oct. 15 in Precinct 2 Justice
Court need not appear, according to
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace

In the heifer show, Aaron Davis
of Goodrich 4-H and FFA pbred
second with his red brangus heifer.
Matthew Clamon of Big Sandy 4-H
showed his simmantal heifer and
placed 15th in a large showmanship
class. Steven Beard of Big Sandy 4-
H and FFA received an eighth place
with his limousine heifer and also
showed her in this showmanship.
Steven, one of Polk County’s two
Gold Star Winners this year also
won a $6,000 scholarship for his
scramble essay at the San Antonio
Stock Show banquet held two
weeks ago.
