Net That Bad
A recent University of Mich-
igan study indicates that growing
old might not be as bad as many
people think. 1
“People of all ages said in
interviews that they1 believed
the later years are fall of pro-
blems,” reports John E. Trop-
ipen, University of Michigan
research scientist in gerontology.
Tropman is a professor of social
work.
“Bat when questioned about
their own situation, those over AS
claimed that they were per-
sonally pretty well off; it was
just the rest of their age group
that was in trouble.
“While about 10 per cent of
those surveyed said that old age
was worse than they had ex-
pected, SO per cent said it was
better than they had expected.
"Americans’ fear of old age
has less to do with years than
with powerlessness,” Tropman
feds. "To many people, ‘growing
old’ means losing control of your
life."
The professor also points out
that “The 16th birthday is not a
cliff from which one falls into a
chasm of old age. The life cycle
continues. Sixty-five to 73 may
represent one phase; 73 to SO
another, an beyond SO, a third.
Medical, economic, housing and
other needs will vary dra-
matically within each of these
age grope, just as they do among
people at yopngerjiiJiyels”',
