Acknowledge the truth
Ta the editor:
Several yean ago a very dear
friend, who has since gone on to
her eternal reward, gave me the
following article to read. It really
brought home to me the horror of
the physical pain and suffering that
Our Lord and Savior, Jcaus Christ
suffered for us. After reading h, by
to imagine - if you can - also bear-
ing the sins of the world for all
mankind at the same time.
A medical doctor provides a
physical description:
The croto is placed on the ground
and the exhausted man is quickly
thrown backwards with his shoul-
den against the wood. The. legion-
naire feels for the depression at the
front of the wrist. He drives a
heavy, square wrought-iron nail
through the wrist deep into foe
wood. Quickly he moves to the
other side and repeats the action,
being careful not to pull foe arms
too tightly, but to allow some flex
and movement The cross is then
lifted into place. The left foot is
pressed backward against the right
foot and with both feet extended,
toes down, a nail is driven through
foe arch of each, leaving foe knees
flexed. The victim is now crucified.
As he slowly sags down with
more weight on foe nails in the
Wrists,1 excruciating fiery pain
shoots along foe fingers and up the
diins to explode in the brain. The
nails in the wrists are putting pres-
sure on the median nerves. As he
pushes himself upward to avoid
this stretching torment, he places
foe Aril weight on the nail through
hit feet. Agria he feels foe tearing
agony of foe nail tearing through
foe nerves between the bones of his
feet
As the arms fatigue, crimps
sweep through his muscles knotting
them in deep relentless and throb-
bing pain. With these cramps
comes foe inability to push himself
upward to breathe. Air can be
drawn into foe lungs but not ex-
haled. He fights to raise himself in
order to get even one small breath.
Finally, carbon dioxide builds up
in foe lungs and in the blood stream
and foe cramp* partially subside.
Spasmodically he is able to push
himself upward to exhale and bring
in Ufe-giving oxygen.
Than are hows of limitless pain,
cycles of twisting, joint-renting
cramps, imtrvninem parasi as-
phyxiation, searing pain as tissue is
tom from his lacerated back as he
moves up and down against rough
timber. Then another agony begins:
a deep crushing pain deep in the
chest as foe pericardium slowly
fills with serum and begins to com-
press foe heart. It is now almost
over. The loss of tissue fluids has
reached a critical level. The com-
pressed heart is struggling to pump
heavy, thick sluggish blood into foe
tissues. The tortured lungs are mak-
ing frantic effort to gasp in small
gulps of sir. He can feel the chill of
death creeping through his tis-
sues. Finally he allows his
body to die.
All of this the Bible records with
the simple words, "and they cruci-
fied Him." (Maifc 13:24) What
wondrous love is this?
THIS is what'Easter, Resurrec-
tion Sunday, is about - not bunnies
and candy. It is love in the purest
form. It is hope and conviction of
our eternal lives. Yes, it is graphic
and hard to read but we all need to
acknowledge it because it is our
very salvation.
I pray that all who read this
know Him. If not, please accept
Him.
Don't just cover up Batter Sun-
day with pleasant tilings of foe
world. Acknowledge the truth that
no ooe will ever love us as much as
Jesus does.
Through Christ, in love....

Power hungry party
To the editor:
The One-Party Rule will surely
send this country into chaos. Our
Constitution was written to have a
check and balance system, not a
dictatorship. The Republicans
would like nothing more than to be
able to have one patty, one dictator.
It is wrong, and unethical.
Please stop foe destruction of our
United States Constitution. The
Republican Party is power hungry
and will do anything it takes to get
their way. Democrats, please stop
this madness ASAP.

Tolerance is respect
To the editor:
I had some problem with follow-
ing Ms. Wanda Jones’ letter to the
editor in that I found it hard to de-
cipher how she felt our schools
were ‘indoctrinating” as opposed to
teaching our children. After wading
through her rhetoric on progressive
bm/humanbm/tolennce’* I came to
what I believe it the crux of her
letters, as the states: “Honesty re-
quires us to admit that hot all ideas,
religions and cultures are equal:
Children should be turned from
multicuhnnliam and back to Jht
study of history and human free-
dom in foe world. The feminists,
homosexuals and religious envi-
ronmentalists who influence our
cniKiren inrougn screening commit*
tees, need to be given foe boot"
How could we teach children
about history and human freedom
without teaching foet" rtiptft and
tolerance for othar's religion, cul-
ture, ideas. Tolerance does not (fic-
tile that ont accept every idea,
h
from so many different countries
with customs that varied even
within themselves, as Americans,
we ate a mingling of all these
groups. I suspect that by turning
them away from “multicuitunilism"
you really are worrying over
“multi-racialism.” That we are not
already multi-racial is e fallacy;
humans since time began are a
mingling of all races that have
evolved into foe seemingly racial
groupings that we see today. There
is no such thing as a pure blood line
in any of the so-called racial
grappa. I question why anyone
would worry over that anyway
since we ate not to be marketed aa
if wa were part of foe American
Kennel Club.
Equality in nature is not poesible;
we ere physical products of nature,
and nature does not guarantee
equality. But it is possible under
the laws of our land. Call it what
you will, teaching children “toler-
ance” fe tantamount to teaching
If we are ever to
to that utopiaa dream of
on earth, we are going to
to teach ourselves and our

Heed the mesage
Ta foe ekltor:
Reality is once again demonstrat-
ing that politicians can oppose or
ignore even the most worthy, moral
legislation sad do so with impunity
if they delay and deceive long
enough.
WWII/Korea era military retirees
earned government funded medical
care. Congress is engaging in the
most bizarre and despicable behav-
ior in refusing to honor the obliga-
tion and commitment made to these
warriors • if Congress delays long
enough these warriors will all be
dead, problem solved.
No initiative can be successful
when Congress purposefully boy-
cotts an issue, bill, movement, etc.
That's what Congress has appar-
ently decided with regard to HR
602/S407, "Keep Our Promise to
America's Military Retirees Act".
This proposed legislation honors s
government medical care contract
made to WWII/Korea era military
retirees.
The Republicans have again con-
sciously established an "unwritten"
rule that encourages Republican
Representatives to ignore and give
no support to HR 602. To support
this hypothesis is the factual list of
cosponsors of HR 602. There are
137 sponsor/cosponsors of HR 602
at this time. Of this count there are
102 Democrats and 33 Republicans
on the cosponsor list We're not
naive enough to think if the power
structure in Congress were re-
versed, the cosponsor status would
not be reversed.
If Republican representatives
were not under some sort of "gag"
rule from leadership, is it reason-
able to expect only a sprinkling of
support for a Bill that honors an
obligation and commitment to
WWII/Korea era military retirees
medical care? One can only con-
clude the Republican leadership
haa threatened the Republican
rank and file.
Does Republican cosponsor ab-
sence reflect the conscience of
nearly 200 Representatives? Are
they ignoring HR 602 of their own
will? I don't think so. Further, does
this negative action reflect the con-
science of the White
House? Apparently so as we know
it reflects the conscience of De-
partment of Defense, as Under Sec-
retary of Defense Chu has publicly
acknowledged opposition to mili-
tary retiree entitlements....
Republican congress-
men/women, heed our message and
understand it, but don't have the
moral courage to do the "right
foing". They are buckling to foe
Republican leadership, conforming
to a group of "yes" men and
women, unwilling to stand for the
moral right.
Only a public outcry will cause
Congress to honor commitments
and obligations to military retirees,
spouses, and widows.
"It does not take a majority to
prevail ... but rather an irate, tire-
less minority, keen on setting
brushfires of freedom in the minds
of men." -Samuel Adams

AUSTIN — The Senate has
passed a $139 billion state budget,
but as foe old saying goes, the devil
is in the details.
With its unanimous approval on
March 23, the Senate's bill goes to
the House, where the numbers are
not only different, the arithmetic
has been called into question by
Comptroller Carole Keeton Stray-
horn. She says House Bill 3 — the
tax bill — lacks billions of dollars
to create a balanced budget.
House leaders dismissed her
comments as political and contin-
ued to put together a state revenue
and spending plan.
