■“ Brother relieves brother in Bosnia
BROTHERS REUNITED
Hogg (left) and
SSgt. Johnny R. Hogg, brothers who had not seen each other
for over two years, are-reunited w Calvin's company, the 41st
Combat Support Hospital (CSH), relieves his brother's 67th
CSH at Eagle Base Hospital in Bosnia.
BOSNIA -- Even their superior
officers think it's unusual -- one
brother replacing another brother
overseas, at the same base, doing
the same job.
That is what U.S. Army SSgt.
Calvin R. Hogg is doing. He has
been deployed to the Eagle Base
hospital in Bosnia, relieving his
brother, SSgt. Johnny R. Hogg,
who has been serving as the hospi-
tal's assistant ward master.
Sons of Johnny and Kathrine
Hogg of Livingston, the brothers
are 1979 graduates of Livingston
High School. Both married their
high school sweethearts; women
who were best friends in high
school and easily adapted to their
roles as sisters-in-law.
Johnny is stationed in
Wurtzburg, Germany, where his
wife, Jodel, and two children, Jenni-
fer, 16, and James Roy, 13, reside.
He is returning to his family after
completing a six-month tour in
Bosnia.
Calvin, who is stationed at Fort
Sam Houston in San Antonio, is
picking up where his brother left
off at the recently-constructed Eagle
Base hospital. His wife, Jeannette,
and four children - David, IS; Brit-
ney, 12; Bree, 9; and Amanda, 23 -
will remain in San Antonio.
It is unusual for one brother to
relieve another brother, but this is
what happened here, said one of the
men's superior officers. Johnny had
served his six-month tour as part of
the 67th Combat Support Hospital
(CSH) Group. The 67th is being re-
lieved by the 41st CSH, Calvin's
unit.
"We are very competitive, so 1
jumped at the opportunity to come
over here," Calvin is quoted as say-
ing in Talon, a magazine serving
the soldiers of Task Force Eagle in
Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Up until the anrival of the relief
force, the brothers had not seen each
other since October, 1996.
Calvin, who also served in Desert
Storm, is deployed to Bosnia for a
six to nine-month tour.

Champion opens land
for third-party review
HUNTSVILLE - Champion In-
ternational Corporation an-
nounced it will voluntarily open
its more than 5.4 million acres of
U.S. forestlands to a rigorous
third-party review in a ma>or ini-
tiative which builds on the com-
pany’s commitment to sustainable
forestry.
The program is designed to
validate that Champion, one of
the nation’s largest private land-
owners, is operating responsibly
under the goals and guidelines of
the Sustainable Forestry Initiative
of the American Paper and Forest
Association (AF&PA).
In Texas, Champion owns one
million acres of forestlands lo-
cated in 24 East Texas counties,
Anderson, Angelina, Chambers,
Cherokee, Grimes, Hardin, Harris,
Harrison, Houston, Jasper, Jeffer-
son, Liberty, Montgomery, Na-
cogdoches, Newton, Panola,
Polk, Rusk, Sabine, San Jacinto,
Shelby, Trinity, Tyler and
Walker.
With the announcement,
Champion becomes the first forest
products company in the industry
to commit to third-party reviews
of all of its U.S. forestlands.
Champion will begin the program
in early 1999 and expects to
complete the first phase of re-
views within three years.
In Texas, Champion has been a
part of the Sustainable Forestry
Initiative since 1994. Bill Krick of
Huntsville, retired general man-
ager for Champion’s Texas Forest
Resources Division, headed the
Texas SFI program, sponsored by
the Texas Forestry Association,
for three years.
The voluntarily verification
program is a new component of
the industry’s SFI, which pro-
motes sustainable forestry among
member companies.
“What we’re talking about is
rigorous, step-by-step analysis of
everyone of our forests. That’s an
area equal to the entire state of
Massachusetts,” stated Richard E.

Olson, Champion chairman and
chief executive offer. “Third party
reviews under SFI build on our
commitment to practice sustain-
able forestry that goes beyond
state and federal laws and regula-
tions and helps to insure public
confidence in our forestry prac-
tices on the ground,” he added.
Amos Enos, executive director
of the National Fish and Wildlife
Service, echoed the sentiments.
“The solution to environmental
needs today is for private corpora-
tions to do their part in addressing
public values and concerns. I ap-
plaud Champion’s decision as
exemplary of the proactive ap-
proach that business must take to
help insure the future of Amer-
ica’s forests.”
The process of third party re-
views will involve teams of inde-
pendent experts conducting inten-
sive audits of the company’s for-
est management practices in each
of eight Champion operating re-
gions in 17 states. The reviews
will cover such issues as prompt
reforestation, protection of water
quality, and enhancement of wild-
life htMOWW
