Crisis Telephone Service
Manned 24 Hours A Day
No one in a mental health
emergency should ever feel
they are alone with nowhere to
turn for help.
A toll-free, crisis telephone
service is available to anyone in
this region of the state by
calling 1-800-392-8343. A pro-
fessional counselor is available
24 hours a day, seven days a
week, on holidays and on
weekends.
The service is provided by
Deep East Texas Regional
Paula Kirby Named
To Honor Society
BEAUMONT-Cap and Gown
senior honor society for women
at Lamar University has initia-
ted 25 new members, said Ann
Shaw, dean of student develop-
ment.
Cap and Gown was first
established in 1960 on, the
Lamar campus to honor senior
women on the basis of out-
standing leadership, scholar-
ship, and service.
Among women named to the
society is Paula Kirby of
Silsbee.
Mental Health Mental Retard-
ation Services (MHMR), head-
quartered in Lufkin with ser-
vice units located in all parts of
the region.
There are 33 mental health
workers who serve on the crisis
line, each being assigned to
rotating shifts during the day
and night, and on weekends
and holidays.
“All staff receive individual-
ized as well as group training
before being put into the on-call
rotation,” explained Mark Sev-
erns, MHMR administrator in
charge of the service.
He added that the primary
purpose of the service is for
information and referral and
not counseling.
“Most of the calls are infor-
mation and referral questions.
About five percent are true
emergencies involving life-
threatening situations," he
said.
Regardless of who answers
the call, all staff members are
carefully trained to guard the
privacy and confidentiality of
the person who calls needing
help.
