VIEWS and NEWS
from our

Several times during the past
months I have suggested the
danger of inflation. At last
most of our people seem to be
awakening to the danger. This
is good but it is already clear
that none of us know exactly
al that should be done and it
is equally clear that lots of us
are unwilling .to do all of what
we know should be done.
Actually it is lots simpler and
easier to create inflation than
it is to stop it without destroy-
ing our economy.
There are those who feel that
high interest rates cause infla-
tion. Clearly high interest is
hurtful but I think that it is a
result not the cause of infla-
tion. Indeed high interest is
often supposed to be a most ef-
fective curb of inflation. At the
present time it seems that the
demand for money is so great
that high interest does not
deter those who want to bor
row. Personally I think we
must use more fundamental
regulators to curb the present
inflation. In the meantime
would like to see us bring all
interest down if we can. I
therefore voted for the
Stephens substitute for the Pat
man bill on yesterday. The
to all financial institutions and
to all depositors. It simply au-
thorized the proper board to
regulate the interest rate that
could be paid by all lending
agencies and on all deposits.
I am not at all sure that even
this approach will work. I
don't think that "price fixing"
has any very enviable record of
succoss (and fixing interest
rates is nothing but fixing the
price for the use of money) but
the approach adopted is at
least fair in that it treats all
alike.
Basically we are simply

ment spending more that it is
collecting in taxes ( and this
alone would probably cause
inflation) but many of our peo-
ple are taking out more than
they are putting into our nat-

derstand that war is inflation-
ary because our military ex-
penditures do not add to our
national assets. Too many of
us have not realized that all
that we spend on protecting

struction caused by these riots
as well as by vandalism and
crime is a drain which should
be avoided but we face an
even greater problem in our
efforts to help the unfortunate.
All that we spend just to sup-
port people is a drain. I think
we can and we should help
those who need help but to the
extent that we support able
bodied adults in idleness no
matter why we do it we are
spending part of our national
wealth without any commensur-
ate contribution to society.
The economic effect is exactly
the same as war expenditures.
I think wc can support the
Vietnam War and all needed
aid to the unfortunate but I
doubt that we can at the same
time support any substantial
part of our people in idleness.
