BIG SPRING - September’s
West Texas VA Medical Center
public hearing drew heavy
attendance, outstanding public
support and an overwhelming
tide of knowledgeable speakers in
favor of continuing the Big Spring
facility’s storied tradition.
The VA Medical Center serves
many Gaines County veterans
with their medical needs.
Since the public hearing,
many citizens are echoing the
same comment - they also want
an opportunity to speak before
the panel charged with making
recommendations for the future of
the mfedical facility.
“Many people have
approached me and 6thers on
the task force: Ed Moughon,
Cindy Smith, Joe Concienne and
asked the same thing - ‘When
are they coming back and how
do we go about speaking before
the commission?’ “ said Shelley
Smith, West Texas Centers for
MHMR CEO and a leader within
the VA Task Force.
With the process only half
way through, the West Texas
VA Medical Center Task Force
members have continued meeting
since the Sept., 1 public hearing,
Smith said.
We still have a lot of public
education to do and we would like
to help facilitate an opportunity
for people to speak to the Local
Advisory Panel during its next
public hearing. We thought the
easiest way to do that is to have
those that want to speak contact
Debbye Valverde at the Big Spring
Chamber of Commerce and we’ll
take it from there,” she said.
Valverde is Executive Director
of the Big Spring Chamber of
Commerce and has been at the
forefront of organizing the Task
Local Club Begins
Campaign for Annual
Christmas Drive
The Seminole Optimist Club is beginning their annual campaign
of picking up donated goods for needy families that are helped by
the club's "Give a Child a Smile" program, held every year before
the Christmas holidays.
Donated items such as non-perishable foods, new and used
clothes, new and used toys and other goods are welcomed.
Coats are especially needed this year. The club is asking that
those who are interested in donating their old and used coats, take
them to J & J Cleaners, located at 110 SE 3rd, through December
12.
The local cleaners will clean the coats and make the necessary
mends if needed.

gram, contact James Wright at (432) 758-2798.
Force’s efforts.
“Although there are no
guarantees we can arrange for
anyone to speak at the next public
hearing, we are interested in
gathering a list of people who want
to speak and trying to organize
it prior to the public hearing,” said
Big Spring State Hospital
Superintendent Ed Moughon,
who serves on the task force. ’>
“The commission members
are very interested in seeing how
much support the hospital has in
Big Spring and an organized and
concentrated effort is our best
option.”

the best locations for veterans to
receive medical care in the future.
Studies will be completed at 18
identified sites around the country
before February 2006 when the
final recommendations will be
made known by VA Secretary
Nicholson.
The West Texas VA Medical
Center Task Force proposed, in
September, for the West Texas
VA Medical Center in Big Spring
to be utilized as a Center of
Excellence in mental health and
add inpatient psychiatry and long-
term domiciliary programs to the
current services being offered at
the facility.
This proposal was presented
to Pricewaterhouse Coopers,
the private consulting firm hired
by the Veterans Administration
to develop the information
and options to be presented to
Secretary Nicholson.
Both the inpatient psychiatry
and* long-term domiciliary
programs would enhance the
current medical and surgical
services currently offered, VA
Task Force Member and Big
Spring Chamber Board President
Joe Concienne said.
“The community of Big
Spring made a big statement at the
last public hearing. Unfortunately
it isn't over yet and we need to
keep our finger on the pulse of this
process and make sure we come
back at the next public hearing
and make that statement once
again,” said Smith.
Those interested in speaking
at the December hearing are urged
to call the Chamber of Commerce
office, (432) 263-7641.
