The statement thin week tip the

thl* winter will he obliged to show
what they were doing during Heji-

was plenty of work for everybody,
1* something of which the whole
population of Deaf Smith county
will approve.
There have been several people
fln Hereford who have been offered
work to do whereby they could
sum money to aupport their fami-
lies for the time being, yet there
Save been reasons why they could
mot do the work—either It van too
Car to the cotton fields, they didn't
want to do Just that kind of work
or their health wouldn’t permit
them.
It la only Just and right that

they apply for assistance, their
record might help determine who

Bd Cox snd Mac Beach had re-

they had tried their hands at pick-

the latter got scared when the
drst six-foot sack was tied to him
and stampeded down the ootton
patch, bucking and pitching like a
hronc. When theas two cowboys
learned they couldn’t reach 800
pounds a dap and that children
sometimes picked aa high as 000,
they grew discouraged and came
back home.

I was glad when the second halt
started and I could follow the

the field.
Several have complained that
the Whltefaces didn't make aa
good showing last Friday aa they
have before, this season. Most of
those who saw the game know
why—that bunch over there oould
play football. They never let down
for one moment, and put up the
hurdest acrap these boys have fac-
ed this season. That was a clean
game, too—hard fought, neither
side asking for or giving quarter
nor stooping to dirty or unfair
football.
The Whltefaces deserved to win
because they started their drive
for a score and made It click for
a bunch of consecutive plays that
shifted the attack from place to
place and punched each time hard
enough to make a gain.
The whole town of Farweil
were the boat sports In the world
Friday. They never gave up con
fldcnce during the game, Just knew
that bunch of Hteers would amuck
out a victory and kept busy tell-
ing them so; but after the game
was over they were loud In their
praise of our boys, their good
sportsmanship and the school they
represented. Hereford was treat-
ed royally Friday and should re
member It well when Farweil comes
over here next year.
Judge W. II. Ely, chairman of
the Htate Highway Commission,
made |s>sslhle the solution of the
labor problem of most of the I •’an-
handle last Ha fur day when he said
at Abilene that the highway de-
partment would approve for state
aid roads constructed of caliche
and Nurfaced with asphalt.
Judge Bly specifically mention-
ed Oldham county, Juat north of
us, and said it would be possible
to get the work begun this winter
and finished before tourist travel
tiegins next cummer. He said a
road Is-il for caliche does not need
seasoning as it does for concrete,
and the work of construction can
themselves of the new tax payment
law, which permits dividing taxes
Into two parts, but pay their first
Fin 1 f, Including poll tax if there
Is any due, before the first of De-
cember.
Those who have the money avail-
get to it.
Kurely this Is the time, If ever
it was, for Deaf Hmlth county
to get roads. Men are going to
need work this winter and need
It badly, Deaf Hmlth county, for
all its pride of accomplishments,

Hereford folks than Farweil folks

although officials said It was the
most Farweil people they ever saw ! structed
<lle 4*ounty In highways and the
need now will rapidly grow worse.
Already one national highway has
been diverted away from this coun-
ty because of lack of highway
facilities. It Is evident that more j
are to follow. Hoads can be built,
for less now than at any time for j
the next fen years. Materials, labor;
and machinery are ehcajier than
for a long time, A modern, state I

Deaf Hmlth county, more money
would be spent here for the high-
way program than would be vot-
ed for tha bonds.
A road program for Deaf Smith
county ahould Include a bond Issue
large enough to Insure adequate
roads over the entire county. That
would not make It neceesery to Is-
sue the bonds Immediately, but
have them available for uae as the
program advances. Should the
county think It advisable at any
time to curtail Its road program.
It could tie stopped right there, and
all bonda not lsau<«d would not lie
a debt on the county.
Deaf Hmlth county needs some-
one to take hold of an Intensive
road building program that wHI
accomplish something of lasting
benefit and stop this foolish waste
of public money that Is existing the
