There is no one who has not
been thrilled with stories of
Texas eowboys. Wanting to re-
new the thrill of boyhood days
obtained in reading of those
men who rode herd on thous-
ands and who went up the
Chisholm trail in the earlier
days, successfully fending off
rustlers and Indians, the writ-
er slipped down to the bull
barn last week before the sale
to see the eowboys in charge.
If the eowboys who dashed
around after ten dollar steers
were glamorous, what a treat
was in store to take a peep at
a troop that had in their round
up some $750-stuff.
Another photograph of Main Street in Hereford, looking north from First Street at the
railroad. Conspicuous are the absenee of motor cars and lack of improvements for traffic.
When this picture was taken is not known, excepting that it was long ago. The first build-
ing on the right is the “Hereford House*located on the corner Kit where the Abo filling
station now is. In the picture published last week, a protruding signboard called this same
location the Tygret Hotel.
(From the Files of The Brand
February 0, 1012.)
A petition had been presented
to the mayor calling for on elec-
tion to vote on the commission
form of government for Hereford.
Bob Denny of the Hawkins ranch
had been tradiug in town.
Sigmund Baer of St Louis was
quoted as saying: “The merchant
who recognizes the dull season Is
like a soldier who throws his am-
munition awviy l»etween engage-
ments. A merchant’s advertising Is
his ammunition.
Mrs. T. X. Helfner lind gone to
the eastern markets to select new
millinery goods and styles.
D. I*. Gass was leaving for the
East and North to make purchases
for Ills dry goods store.
O. F. Kerr had announced for
county Judge of Castro county.
George Dent had trapped 51
skunks, eight coons and one fox.
W. I. Chapman had reported
fattening seven pigs to a weight
of 2500 pounds on maize and
wheat. This was in nature of an
experiment.
The body of Roliert Ruiuey, a
brother of Edgar Ramey, Dlmmitt,
had been brought here from Chi-
cago where he had been killed by
a railroad engine.
Bob Brazil', candidate for mar-
shal, was predicting a snow here
soon.
Tom J. Bassett, commissioner
from the north purt of the county,
ro|>orted cattle recovering from the
textreiuely cold weather.
J. A. Fox of Xewlln had been
visiting here. His ?»tore at Newlln
had lieen destroyed by fire.
Hollywood riders, but stay for prepared that many folks these
from these fine Hereford as-
semblies. The only natural
thing was the bunk space in
the front part of the big
sales pavilion; the rest was
“the bunk” as far as old-time
cowboys go. Instead of jingl-
ing spurs and pearl-handled
six-shooters, the boys had hand
pails for carrying water and
maple-floored trough platters
to be filled with tin-foil wrap-
ped pellets and factory - made
breakfast foods for the high--
elass bulls.
The nearest thing we know
days would be glad to have.
Instead of wearing ehaparajos,
the cowboys drove up in fine
ears, went in and dressed for
a bam cleaning part. Another
youthful treasure of the mind
gone.

The passing of the comet
with a Germanic name which
barely missed the earth, cel-
estially speaking, by a mere
five million miles recalls the
scare a Hereford man had
short about one and one-half
dozen. The dancers were us-
ing a ten - count in the
transaction as upon that basis
there should have been 120 in-
stead of 144 eggs.
