Open House
Saturday
The Harmony Boys Home in Archer
City is celebrating its first year anniver-
sary with an open house this Saturday,
June 24, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. The
Board of Directors of Harmony Family
Services will hold its regualr monthly
meeting at the Boys Home prior to the
open house with board members travel-
ing from Abilene to join the Archer
County board members for the meeting.
The public is invited for guided tours of
the facility.
The Boys Home officially opened in
June of 1994 after two years of fund
raising and more than five years of plan-
ning and discussion. The Boys Home is
a residential treatment center which
operates to help severely abused and
neglected youth put their lives back
together after the tragedies of abusive
and dysfunctional family life. Through
the use of professional counseling, psy-
chiatric treatment and around-the-clock
supervision, these young men slowly
learn to trust adults, develop healthy
relationships, and to function in a com-
munity.
Since the Boys Home opened in June_
of last year, more than 45 boys have
been provided a place to live while they
were assisted in putting their lives back
together. Nineteen boys live at the home
today with more coming in the near
future. The facility is licensed to pro-
vide for up to 28 boys at any one time;
however, since opening, the most that
have been there at one time was 21 with
an average of about 18 over the past 12
months.
Harmony Family Services has plans to
open a group foster home program for
boys somewhere in the North Texas area
in the near future so that when the boys
are ready for a less structured place-
ment, one will be ready for them.
Doug Worthington, President and
Executive Director for Harmony Family
Services, Inc., stated, "Even with the
typical start-up problems, I am pleased
with the first year and continue to be
pleased each day with the improve-
ments in operations brought about by
the staff. I am greatly pleased with the
community support shown over the past
year and in particular over the past few
weeks. It truly does take the "whole
village to raise a child", and I am pleased
that the village of Archer County is
stepping forward to help."
Archer City has now joined
Megargel, Scotland, and Lakeside
City with their own newspaper
recycling centers. Six - three yard
containers have been placed in Archer
City at die following locations:
Assembly of God, Church of Christ,
First Baptist Church, first Christian
Church, first United Methodist, and
the Archer Nursing Home: Newsprint
will be collected from these locations
weekly. Wichita Recycling will issue
proceeds checks to the churches and
nursing home for helping with the
effort.
The Bell Group was instrumental in
organizing the recycling effort. Due
to market fluctuations in newsprint
prices, no estimate is available as to
what die churches can expect. "We
hope this will be good for the
community on two fronts," Jim
Lawrence, Bell representative stated.
"If we c;ui help put some dollars
toward the local youth projects, that
will be great; but, if we can also help
reduce the landfill load we will be
helping future generations.
Approximately 25% of landfill refuse
is newsprint. The biggest problem we
have in making the program
successful is keeping the newsprint
clean. If even one bag of trash gets
thrown in the newsprint recycling
bins, die whole load is ruined."
Paul LeBIanc and Jim Lawrence of the Bell Group show off the containers that are being used to collect newspapers
for recycling. Funds from the sale of the papers will be distributed to the local churches for use by their youth groups.
