RECORDS, TRANSFERS
By Sen. Lloyd Bentsen
In the days following the
attack on Pearl Harbor, armed
guards escorted a strong box to
Fort Knox, Kentucky. Inside
the bronze box were historical
documents in a style of hand
writing that few people today
are familiar with.
Such security measures might
have seemed excessive to
some.
But these documents held a
greater value than all the gold
at Fort Knox. They were the
original Declaration of In-
dependence and Constitution of
the United States-not simply
fragile parchment, but a ring-
ing assurance of liberty and
guarantor of individual free-
doms.
This Fourth of July, we
celebrate the 211th anniversary
of the Declaration of Indepen-
dence. We also pay particular
attention this year to the
bicentennial of our Constitu-
tion.
“The Declaration is a state-
ment of principles and aspira-
tions," former Chief Justice
Stress And Caring
For The Alzheimer Patient
Seeking information and ob-
taining outside help are the
most effective ways to reduce
stress that can result from
caring for someone with Alz-
heimer's disease, according to
the January issue of Texas
Medicine.
Seeking information about
the disease can help raise the
awareness of the family about
personal adjustments and time
requirements that will enable
them to better prepare for the
impending stress, write the
authors from Texas Tech Uni-
versity in Lubbock.
Illnesses which prove most
disruptive, and thus most
stressful, are those that pro-
duce psychological alterations,
they write. While the majority
of Alzheimer patients are cared
for by family members, little
has been written about the
stress caused by progressive
mental diseases, add Jean
Pearson Scott, P.N. McKenzie,
D. Slack, and Dr. J. Thomas
Hutton.
In their study 21 persons who
were primary caregivers for a
family member with Alzhei-
mer’s disease, the authors
found that certain coping stra-
tegies contributed to stress.
These are an increase in the
amount of time spent with the
patient, disurption in sleep
patterns, and a change in
recreational activites. “It is
surprising, that the strategy of

CAP Technical School
Jim Sims was one of approxi-
mately 50 Civil Air Patrol
cadets and the only .Texan
selected to attend the annual
Pathfinders Technical School at
Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri,
June 5 through 14.
Training focused on search
and rescue, first aid, wilder-
ness survival and the role of the
Air Force. Civil Air Patrol
cadets from across the United
States-Hawaii to Maryland-
attended the school.
Jim is a member ol the
Beaumont Composite Squadron
and holds the rank of master
sergeant. He will be a freshman
at Silsbee High School next
year and is the son of Vic and
Glenda Sims.
The Civil Air Patrol cadet
program is open to young
people who are at least 13 years
old or who have completed
sixth grade. Meetings are held
each Tuesday evening at the

Terminal building at 7 p.m.
future planning was not more
strongly associated with de
crease in stress," according to
the article in the official journal
of the Texas Medical Associ-
ation. “In fact, planning ap-
pears to ^e more indicative of a
stress increase (34.7 percent)
rather than a stress reduction
...this may be due to the
progressive deterioration of the
disease and acknowledged lack
of cure.”
"It is also important to note
that most of the coping strate-
gies associated with an increase
in stress involved a change or
modification in the personal life
of the caregiver,” write the
authors. They add that strate-
gies such as changes in recre-
ational activities, sleep pat-
terns, time commitments, and
financial status are inherent in
the role of a primary caregiver.
The article also suggests that
health care practitioners can
play a valuable role in provid
ing needed information and
encouraging the use of outside
assistance for persons caring
for an Alzheimer patient.

Rites To Be Held
On Saturday For
Naomi Turk Thomas
Funeral services for Naomi
Turk Thomas, 36, of Silsbee,
will be held Saturday at 1 p.m.
at the First Baptist Church,
North Second Street, with bur-
ial in Kirby Cemetary, under
the direction of Coleman’s Fun-
eral Home.
She died Tuesday at St.
Elizabeth Hospital after an
illness.
A native of McWilliams, Ala-
bama, she had lived most of her
life in Silsbee, and was a
self-employed beautician.
A wake will be held Friday,
July 3, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at
Coleman's Funeral Home.
Survivors include: Her hus-
band, James Thomas of Sils-
bee: mother, Dovie M. Turk, of
Silsbee; two stepdaughters,
Nadine Hambrick of Silsbee,
Faydean Robertson of Houston;
two stepsons, Larry Thomas
and James Thomas, Jr., both of
Silsbee; five sisters, Earthel
Whittle of Silsbee, Evelyn El-
liott, Elaine Birdsong, and
Pearlie Mae Moham, all of
Denver, Colorado, Exie L.
Warren of Jacksonville, Flori-
da; four brothers, Leroy Stall-
worth of Silsbee, Robert Stall-
worth of Denver, Colorado,
Brady Turk of Houston, and
Charles Turk of Buna.
Warren Burger said in describ-
ing the relationship between
the documents. “The other, the
Constitution, was directed at
the means to achieve ordered
liberty through government
and subject to change only by
consent of those governed.”
To see how well these .have
worked, consider the words of
the French statesman, Alexis
de Tocqueville, who toured this
country in the 1800s and wrote
about his experiences in Demo-
cracy in America.
It is a classic summary of the
differences between our gov-
vernment and the totalitarian
and communist regimes whose
oppressiveness has caused so
many to flee to America:
Democracy and socialism have
nothing in common but one
word: equality. But... while
democracy seeks equality in
liberty, socialism seeks equal
ity in restraint and servitude.
Millions of people have not
been fortunate enough to live
under democratic constitutional
government. They are forced to
live by totalitarian dictates
outlined in documents such as
Mein Kampf and the Com-
munist Manifesto, the doctrine
laid down by Karl Marx and
Friedrich Engels. For the, the
notions embodied in our De-
claration of Independence do
not exist.
The Manifesto advocates the
abolition of such sentiments as
"bourgeois freedom,” “bourg
eois independence" and “bour
geois individuality." It speaks
of abolishing religions, coun-
tries and nationalities.
According to Marxist theory
-especially as it subsequently
was interpreted by Lenin, Sta-
lin and other communist lead-
ers-if people will only suppress
for the time being their desire
for freedom and if they per-
severe long enough, the state
will eventually “wither away."
But history has shown other
wise. Rather than withering
away, governments in com-
munist countries have grown
increasingly dominant, harsher
and harsher in their rule. We
have to look no farther than
Afghanistan or Poland to see
that.
When our forefathers signed
the Declaration of Indepen-
dence on July 4, 1776, they
were so committed to the
concepts of equality, liberty
and rights that they agreed to
“mutually pledge to each other
our lives, our fortunes and our
sacred honor."
Eleven years later, their
commitment made it possible
for 55 men, who lived in a
country of barely four million
people, to ratify the Constitu
tion. It cast the mold that
formed one of history's greatest
experiments in government.
Wars have threatened our
nation since then, and the value
of gold and other worldly
fortunes has fluctuated widely.
But the priceless gift inscribed
on these pieces of parchment is
undiminished.
