‘Qentle Look’ Emphasized
Jrt London Spring Fashions
By KAY LAWRENCE
Wjth the Paris spring fashion
showings ip full swing, and the
over-all picture of the near future
not yet fully focus, it might be
well at this time to look at the
English contribution. London’s
part in the spring fashion parade
is described as “the gentle look.”
The name was invented by top de-
signer Michael—he never uses his
full name—and eleven other Lon-
don couturiers who are emphasiz-
ing the trend toward softness and
femininity. As one of the stylists
put it, “Spring’s woman enters
very softly, and she is elegant and
sophisticated.”
Clothing for spring’s woman is
inalined to balloon in front and to
flare. Jackets of suits are a bit
shorter, and skirts a bit longer—
12 to 13 inches from the floor.
The greater distance between the
hem of the jacket and the hem
of-the skirt gives an illusion of
long legs. The courturiers speak
of fluid lines, suiting the -person-
alities and bodies of well-poised
women. They' emphasize the crea-
tions are all English and little in-
fluenced by the fancies of Paris
or Rome.
One of the best English shows
is put on by Norman Hartnell,
dressmaker to Queen Elizabeth.
His colors are daring, with just
about every hue in the rainbow
represented. His waistline is
where nature put it. Hips are given
a narrower look and the shoulders
are Inclined to be broader. His
daytime dress is a little bit longer
than--last year, but the evening
gown has-shortened a little
Most of the London designers
favor ankle length for the eve-
ning gown, but a dress that
sweeps the floor still is accept-
able. Chiffon is the first choice of
material for evening, and usually
is 3 creation made up of many
pleats.
Another influential London, de-
signer, named La Chasse, has stir-
red up Interest by abandoning
petticoats. His skirts fall with the
weight of their own folds. This
softer effect is achieved by In-
creasing the use of dainty modern
textiles. According to the descrip-
tion, the materials must be liquid,
limp and flowing, w i t h loops,
folds, drapes and pleats in favor.
The new weaves include, soft,
silk crepes, satin georgettes and
chiffons. One of the chiffons gives
the effect of what is called poppy
petal crinkle, accentuating its
softness.
In Paris, Christian Dior is cele-
brating his 10th anniversary as
dictator of Paris fashions, pre-
senting his new spring collection
tomorrow. What he will unveil is

With canned corn high on the
plentiful list, and cheese tjpo,
they can be put together for a
good, Sunday night supper, or a
hearty noonday meal. West Vir-
ginia University home economists
have come up with such a dish,
with the addition of canned to-
matoes.
To make thte meal, saute one
chopped green pepper and one
small chopped onion in 2 table-
spoons of butter. While this is
sauteing, heat ip the top of a
double boiled one cup of drained,
fanned tomatoes and two-thirds
of a cup of canned corn. Add 2
tablespoons of quick - cooking
tapioca, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/8
teaspoon of pepper, a few grains
of cayenne, and the sauteed veg-
etahjes in the top of the ‘double
boiler. Cook and stir over the
boiling, water for 7 minutes.
Then add one and a third cups
of grated cheese —• ' whatever
variety you like — and continue
stirring until the c-keese is melt,
ed.
This can be served on toast,
along with a crisp green salad.
And to top it off, some canned
fruit, suph as purple plums. Be-
sides being colorful and flavor-
ful, right now they are a good
buy.

Murder Suspect

About Sisters
-1 Chicago,1!Jan. II UP —Amur-
der yuspect picked up ip Chicago’s
down-and- outers neighborhood
claims sheriff’s men beat and
kicked him into eiggrinp a con-
fession that he had a part in the
deaths of the two ’teen-age Grim-
es Kiris.-.’
The prisoner, Edward Bedwell,
told a judge during a hearing in
Chicago today that his so-called
confession was false; that after
what he says was his mistreat-
ment by authorities he decided
that he had better tell them what
they wanted to know. Bedwell
was in court in connection with
an attempt by his lawyer to ob-
tain the suspect’* release from
jail —- and the heating Is to con-
tinue tomorrow.
Before the hearing, Sheriff Jo-
seph Loliman — t<> whom Bedwell
made a signed -confession .— as-
serted he still believed, that the
prisoner killed the .Grimes sis-
ters. The. sheriff said Bedwell is
lying; that the prisoner never
>vas beaten.
However, investigators are de-
scribed as growing increasingly
skeptical of the confession. They
are repotted checking reports
that. 15-year-old Barbara and 13-
year-old Tatricia Grimes might
have been abducted or picked up
as they walked home from a
movie the night they disappeared
last December 28tJ>.
The suspect’s latest contention
is that he was not out with the
Grimes sisters. That he and a
friend had gone o„ut with 10-year
old Irene Dean and her 18-year-
old cousin, Carol King.. The two
girls have, substantiated . their
dates with Bedwell and a .friend.

en. Only Dior himself and his top
designers know what he will spring
on the fashion world this year.
It was Dior who saved France
its reputation as the style center
of the world. Just after the war,
many designers decided the fa-
shion capital had shifted to New
York, but Dior drew them back
to Paris by quickly sending into
banishment the square-shouldered,
short-skirted," t o n g jacketed sil-
houette that emerged from the
war. He did it with his new look-—

ten, was full-skirted, slim-waisted,
mid-half length, and, above all.
was feminine. It was an overnight
sensation
Dior now is at the peak of his
fame, and Paris awaits his new
showing, confident the 52-year
old designer will dominate the
fashion field for a long time to
come.
Find Meaning
An international authority on
parent-child relations, Dr. Fritz
Redl, says it is not necessary for
parents to be experts in child psy-
chology, in order to raise their
youngsters wisely. However, the
doctor says parents should make
a habit of looking below the sur-
face of a ehild’s problem. There
are several possible reasons for
impudence in children, and, in
living with adolescents, you can-
not afford to judge on suiface be-
havior. First, find the meaning
•f- the unwelcome behavior and
then deal with it accordingly. And
don’t act when you're excited—*
take time to think.
Dr. Redl also advised against
crushing ail rebellion— he says
that if you stamp out an intelli-
gent protest you will latar have
a problem adult. A youngster
should have enough strength of
mind to say “no” whence thinks
he is justified. Parents can help
teen-agers avoid group trouble by
giving them support when they re-
bel intelligently at home. When a
youngster makes a point, or when
he sticks to a conviction, or when
he insists on doing what he thinks
is important, he is keeping his in-
tegrity.
Dr. Redl points out that every
age holds behavior traits that are
perfectly normal, although some-
what upsetting for parents. This
experimental behavior is neces-
sary, put parents should maintain
some control or it can be dan-
gerous. Among other things par-
ents must keep in mind,' Dr. Redl
says, the afHlty to say “yes" or
“no” in a cheerful but final fa-
shion.
Here is how Dr. Redl puts it:
“Most problems with children can
be solted by looking at them pa-
tiently. But parents don’t need to
be cont i n u a 11 y uncomfortable
about ruining their children. Chil-
dren aren’t as fragile as you
think. If they’re accepted and lov-
ed, and their basic needs are met,
they’ll get along. It takes about S
years of hard effort to really mess
up a kid, and, you can’t do it
