For Arabs
parent effort was made to as-
semble the Koran in chronolog-
ical order, but his successors
scrupulously avoided the temp-
tation to edit or supply con-
nection sentences for seeming-
ly missing parts.
There is no dpubt, however,
that the richly lyrical and rhap-
sodic parts of the Koran were
dictated early in Mohammed’s
religious career; the more dec-
trinal sections, whim he was
speaking at Islam’s elder.
The Koran — the legacy of
one mortal man — had a dy-
namic effect on the Areb
people- It converted merchants
into scholars, tribesmen into
warriors. Its unifying influ-
ence helped a basically nomad-
ic people to forge, in brief de-
cades after the prophet’s death,
one of the world’s j
empires.
The holy book has remained
a vital part of educational tra-
dition In the Islamic World,
giving each generation an un-
usual love of its language.

of their holy book as possible.
Yet Westerners know little
about the Koran’s contents, be-
cause t r a n s 1 ations are rare.
Translators approach it with
extreme caution.
Moslems hold that the words
of the holy book — which gov-
ern every moral and civil ac-
tion of a believer — were
transmitted from God directly
to the prophet Mohammed
some 1,3 5 0 years ago.
The phraseology may not be
altered, and translations are
never used in mosques.

Murder Trial
To Fi. Worth
Gainesville, Sept. 19 tP —
The trial of a 28-year-old ex-
convict charged with murder
in the shooting of a state high-
way patrolman has been trans-
ferred from Gainesville to Fort
Worth.
The accused man is Jerry
Don Anderson of Dallas.
He was charged in the June
8th shooting death of Highway
Patrolman Kenneth Harrison
near Gainesville. Harrison died
of five bullet wounds in the
back as he was taking Ander-
son and a woman companion
to jail. She is to be tried separ-
ately.
The 16th District Court judge
at Gainesville, Jack Gray,or-
dered the change of venue
after an earlier effort to select
a jury in the North Texas city
failed. This morning Judge
Gray ordered the trial trans-
ferred to criminal district court
in Tarrant County before Judge
Byron Matthews.
No trial date was set. The
Cooke County attorney, L. V.
Henry, Jr., said he will seek an ,
early hearing.
became available in the United
States in 1946. Another pock-
et - book Koran — translated
from Pakistan into English —
will soon appear.
Moslem reverence for the
Koran’s precise words have
preserved in absolute purity a
classical form of Arabic which
can be under stood readily
across the entire Arab World
from Morocco to Indonesia.
An Arab who has memorized
the entire book — which con-
tains 114 SURAS, or chapters,
of varying lengths — earns the
coveted title HIFA. His ac-
complishment is compeuaded if
he can make at least one pil-
grimage in his lifetime to Mec-
ca, the birthplace of Moham-
med in present - day Saudi
Arabia.
Mohammed never pretended
to be devine, and one of his
last utterances was, “Oh Lord,
let not my tomb be ever an
object of worship.” Born in
about A. D. 570, the infant
Mohammed was given by his
widowed mother to the care of
a foster mother in the desert.
At perhaps 40, an unlettered
man, Mohammed experienced
an evtroordinary religious en-
lightment which turned him
from Mecca’s idolatry to his
own conception of an all-pow-
erful, merciful deity not unlike
the Hebrew and Christian God.
Recorded on Palm Leaves
Every word of the Koran was
dictated by Mohammed to asso-
ciates who jotted the revela-
tion on bits of p a r c h m ent,
palm leaves, and scraps of
leather. After his death from
fever in 632 and his burial in
Medina, the fragments were
collected and arranged. No ap-
tion with an additional 43 em-
ployes and additional equip-
ment.
The product is one which re-
tains the ability to store elec-
tric energy for a considerable
time. It is used in precision
timing • circuits and for clean-
ing electronic signals.

There’s one in the middle of

The town at the junction of

century ago had a population
of more than 300. But less
than 100 persons remained in
the area and the post office
and college were gone when

How long is a mile? Only 1,-

It measures that distance on

The mile was shortened a
few years ago when the rail-

Since the mileposts are num-

here and Paducah, they had process and smuggled them out
to be relocated to conform to in his head.
