Some cookbook authors
should be awarded medals for
never promulgating mishmash-
es.
And Helen Evans Brown
should get the first medal.
Her taste is as straight as a
die.
Married to Philip Brown, a
Crew Assigned
To Maintain
Nuclear Ship
Lynchburg, Va., June 4 UP
— Nuclear scientists ’and engi-
neers are on their way to
maintain the nuclear ship Sa-
vannah in Galveston tied up in
a labor dispute.
The company sending the
men is Babcock a n d Wilcox
atomic energy division in
Lynchburg.
A spokesman for the com- I Philip’s cooking notes,
paiiy said the engineers and '
dealer in rare books and an
American history specialist,
Helen’s cookbooks have bene-
fited from Philip’s erudition
and are always spiced with fas-
cinating culinary material.
Not long ago Helen and Phil-
ip co-authored “Breakfasts and
Brunches for Every Occasion”
(Doubleday), a much - needed
offering. Through the years
there have been few books on
the subject, but nothing first-
rate. Now the Browns have rec-
tified this with exciting menus
and recipes from all over the
world. Recently a friend, giving
her first outdoor breakfast
party of the season, asked us
to recommend a menu. We
borrowed one straight out of
the Hrowns’ “Breakfasts and
Brunches for Every Occasion.”
When our friend thanked us,
she wrote: "You’ve won a con-
vert for the Browns! Nothing
could have tasted better than
the food prepared according to
their suggestions.”
Here’s the breakfast menu
we chose from the Browns’
book and some of Helen and
ic itists were sent to the Sa-
vannah for a maintanco and
-af 'ty purpose only and until
such time as a new crew is
trained for the vessel the men
will remain.
The Savannah, the world’s
first nuclear merchant - pas-
senger ship, has been immobil-
ized at Galveston since some
:;(i engineers resigned in a la-
bor dispute in May.
The spokesman said the
“most competent specialists in
the nuclear field” are main-
taining the ship in a “maxi-
mum, safe status.”

i tie vice - president in
chaige of the Bobcoek and
Wilcox atomic energy division
in Lynchburg, Richard H. Har-
rison, said the company has in
its employ "more than an ade-
quate number” of scientists,
engineers and other highly
trained personnel to secure
the Savannah’s reactor.
Harrison said it would prob-
ably take six months to train
a new crew, based on previous
experience.

Rescue Teeth
Three Rivers, Mass., June
4 ip—The volunteer fire de-
partment of Three Rivers
has triumphed in an un-
usual emergency. Amateur
gardener Masse Froese s
false teeth dropped into a
28 - feet deep well, and
friends called the fire de-
partment. Assistant chief
John Sasur ordered the four
feet of water drained from
the well. Then Sasur climb-
ed down a rope ladder and
recovered the dentures for
gardener Froese.

London broil:
You'll ne e d 2 Prime-or
Choice-grade flank steaks for
(5. unless they are very large
ones. Remove the thin mem-
brane, but do not score. Broil
over a hot charcoal fire for 3
minutes on each side, a min-
ute longer if you don't like i
very rare meat. (London broil
i should always be rare, how-
S ever, as it is tough otherwise.)
Using a razor-sharp knife, slice
very thin slices at a diagonal,
across the grain. Each slice
should he at least 214 inches
vide.
Mushrooms in Foil:
Clean a pound of fresh
mushrooms, cutting off bot-
toms of stems if they are grit-
ty. Slices or not, as you pre-
fer. Tear off <> oblongs of
heavy foil and fold each in
half, making a double thick-
ness. Divide mushrooms among
the squares, put a tablespoon
of butter on each, sprinkle
with salt and pepper, and fold
into an envelope, sealing edg-
es with a triple fold. Cook at
the edge of the coals, where
the heat is less intense. Turn
after 10 minutes and contin-
ue cooking for another 10.
Serve from the foil, but have
scissors handy to slit an “X”
in the top of each packet.
