2:30. Johnson proposed, less
than 24 hours after meeting
his First Lady. They
were married two months
later.
The Only First Lady To
Be Confined In A Mental
Institution: Mary Todd
Lincoln had a tragic life.
She gave birth to four sons.
Four year old Edward died
in Springfield. Twelve year
old "Tad" died while she
was in the White House, and
her husband, Abraham, was
assassinated while sitting
beside her in a theater. She
was from Kentucky and
several Todd family members,
serving in the Confederate
Army, were killed in action.
These tragedies were too
much for poor Mary. Her
behavior became so irrational
that in 1875 her son Robert
had her declared legally
insane and committed to a
sanitarioum. She was freed
four months later.
One other First Lady made
a significant contribution to
America but she may not
have been the first. Caroline
Scott Harrison, wife of the
23rd President, was in the
White House in 1890 when
the trustees of Johns Hopkins
Medical College asked her
assistance in a fund drive
they were launching. She
readily agreed, but added one
condition: They had to amend
the college charter to admit
women students. They agreed
to her terms. Unfortunately,
Mrs. Harrison died of cancer
in 1892. She never saw the
first women doctors graduate
from the famous medical
school.
Comanche Middle School
Attendance/Grades Winners
By Leah Franco
Comanche Middle School
is proud to announce their
5th six weeks Attendance/
Grade winners! On Thursday,
April 17th, 6 students were
awarded a set of headphones
which were purchased out of
the Comanche Middle School
Academic Booster funds.
The students’ names were
selected from a list of names
consisting of students with (1)
Perfect Attendance, (2) All A’s
& B’s and Perfect Attendance,
and (3) All A’s and Perfect
Attendance. The awesome
part of that is a student who
had perfect attendance and
all A’s had three chances of
winning because he or she was
on (1) the Perfect Attendance
list, (2) the All A’s & B’s list
with Perfect Attendance and
(3) the All A’s with Perfect
Attendance list!
So all of that hard work
did pay off for 6th graders,
Macey Brawley and Judith
Moreno; 5th graders, Hailey
Lorta and Cody Feist; and 4th
graders, Rachael Barron and
Alexandre Rangel.
The last drawing of the
year will be on the last day!
So, remind those students to
be at school and study hard, it
does pay off!
